Argentina President Milei suffers crushing defeat in Buenos Aires provincial election
Milei’s recently formed La Libertad Avanza party captured just 34% of the vote in Argentina’s biggest province, losing by a landslide to the left-leaning Peronist opposition, which secured 47% with the majority of ballots counted late Sunday. Milei conceded that his right-wing party’s crushing 13-point loss to his populist rivals represented “a clear defeat.” “We suffered a setback, and we must accept it responsibly,” Milei told grim-faced supporters at the party headquarters, his tone reflective, even chastened.

Colombia’s traditional center-right parties face internal rebellions ahead of elections
In the Liberal Party, a left-wing faction has been clashing with party director Cesar Gaviria over his opposition to the government of Gustavo Petro for years. While Gaviria wants to be with the center-right coalition in opposition to the left, the dissident faction claims to be “firm with Gustavo Petro,” and has expressed support for the candidacy of Carolina Corcho, Petro’s former health minister. …. The Conservative Party’s leadership is preparing sanctions against representatives who obtained key positions in the administration for their support for the government’s legislative agenda.

‘They grabbed us like dogs’: deportation quotas tear Haitian migrants’ lives apart
Under pressure to meet a weekly deportation quota of 10,000, the Dominican Republic’s general directorate of migration (DGM) is now pushing into bateyes. Raids are increasing, and even people born in the Dominican Republic – with documents or not – are being rounded up and deported, flagrantly disregarding laws, according to human rights organisations.

Turkiye’s opposition CHP supporters clash with police outside Istanbul HQ
CHP national leader Ozgur Ozel dismissed the ruling as “null and void”, saying Tekin had been expelled from the party. Celik also insisted he would not hand over the post. Tekin entered the building on Monday after a lengthy standoff, telling reporters he was not working for the state and would focus on resolving the party’s legal disputes. Al Jazeera’s Sinem Koseoglu, reporting from Istanbul, said prosecutors launched the case after complaints from a faction within the CHP, accusing the dismissed leadership of irregularities and corruption during the party’s 2023 congress. “For opposition supporters, this is seen as a judicial coup against them while rival CHP members insist the ruling addresses corruption,” she said.

Palestine Action Germany break into Israeli Elbit arms firm in Ulm
A video accompanying the post appears to show several members of the group breaking into an office building and destroying equipment, including computer hardware and furniture. The activists also seem to ransack documents in the office, leaving them strewn across the office floor. One member of the group is seen spraypainting "Baby Killer" on a desk and on a wall, likely referring to Israel's killing of thousands of Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip.

Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez says Israel is ‘exterminating a defenceless people’
Among the measures he announced “to stop the genocide in Gaza and to go after its perpetrators” was a law formalising the existing, de facto prohibition on military equipment sales or purchases with Israel, and a ban on the use of Spanish ports and airspace to transport fuel or weapons to the Israeli military. Sánchez also said those “directly involved in the genocide” would not be allowed into Spain and announced increases in his country’s humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Supreme Court lifts restrictions on LA immigration stops set after agents swept up US citizens
The majority did not explain its reasoning, as is typical on the court’s emergency docket. But Justice Brett Kavanaugh said the lower-court judge had gone too far in restricting how Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents can carry out brief stops for questioning. “The prospect of such after-the-fact judicial second-guessing and contempt proceedings will inevitably chill lawful immigration enforcement efforts,” he wrote in a concurrence.

Mamdani says he will keep New York City pension fund out of Israel Bonds
Lander, who took office in 2022, decided not to purchase new Israel Bonds when $30m of the bonds matured in early 2023, citing a city policy of avoiding foreign sovereign debt and a desire not to give Israel preferential treatment over other countries in the pension portfolio. After Lander’s revelation in July, his decision sparked controversy and backlash, with accusations that he had capitulated to the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. Lander maintains his decision was not political.

'The Act of Killing' exposes bloody history of the Indonesian regime
As revolutionary events rock Indonesia, we wish to bring to the attention of our readers a masterpiece of documentary filmmaking, the 2012 film The Act of Killing. This documentary is truly a unique and harrowing watch. It is also invaluable as an insight into the nature of the regime that the youth of Indonesia are rising against today. In 2011, director Joshua Oppenheimer travelled to Indonesia and managed to convince perpetrators of the 1965 massacre of 3 million communists and their supporters, not only to brag about their crimes, but to reproduce those crimes before a film crew in the most surreal manner. In 1998, Indonesia experienced a revolution that overthrew the dictator Suharto who oversaw those crimes. But the revolution didn’t go all the way. That is why the butchers of 1965 who Oppenheimer interviews and works with can laugh and joke about their crimes. They enjoy complete impunity, and continue to be celebrated as national heroes, because the New Order regime is still essentially in power, the butchers are still in place. In 1998, the regime merely gave itself a superficial lick of ‘democratic’ paint in the so-called process of Reformasi. All that is brought to the fore in this marvellous documentary, in which we see the ‘democratic’ Indonesian state in all its glory: intertwined with gangsterism, with corruption, and basing itself on a thick atmosphere of fear and oppression. The documentary can be viewed on Youtube, and we re-publish a full review from 2013 below.

The 100-Word Ceasefire “Proposal” Trump Sent Hamas
A five-point summary outlining U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal for a Gaza ceasefire was delivered to Hamas by mediators over the weekend. Trump has characterized the ultimatum as the final offer to the Palestinian resistance movement before Israel accelerates its campaign to enact the total destruction of the Gaza Strip. The brief, approximately 100-word document, presented in Arabic and obtained by Drop Site, is titled, “The Main Proposal.” The full text and English translation is at the bottom of this article. The outline, which contains sparse details, states that, within 48 hours of accepting the ultimatum, Hamas and other resistance groups would release all Israeli captives, living and deceased. In return, Israel would free an unspecified number of “Palestinian prisoners sentenced to life and detainees from Gaza” within 48 hours. “A ceasefire will go into effect upon implementation, for a period of 60 days or until negotiations are concluded. President Trump will guarantee that the parties negotiate in good faith until an agreement is reached,” according to the outline. During this two-month period of negotiation, the outline proposes the “disarmament” of Gaza and “the formation of a new government,” saying that the withdrawal of Israeli forces would be addressed only after a new governing authority is installed or negotiations are completed. It also mentions “amnesty” for Hamas members. The document—which is, at times confusingly phrased—refers to negotiating “the definition of Hamas,” but does not explain what that means. The U.S. proposal states that there would be “Open flow of aid into Gaza upon implementation of the agreement,” but does not address the quantity of aid, who would distribute it, or what types of goods would be allowed in. It is not clear who drafted the document that Hamas says was delivered to the movement by the mediators. It does not contain any seals, stamps, or signatures, and it is not dated. “This is what we received from the Americans. It looks like it was written by the Israelis,” a senior Hamas official told Drop Site. “The intention isn't [only] to achieve a full military victory or surrender of the movement, but also a de-legitimization of the Palestinian resistance, to deal with it like the Nazis, and the Israelis enjoy [the appearance of] moral superiority.”

Fears grow for future of employment rights Bill after reshuffle
FOR many unions the Employment Rights Bill has been the saving grace of a Labour government whose policies on public services, welfare or climate change and a just transition give them little to cheer about. But disquiet about the Bill’s future is obvious at the TUC Congress in Brighton this week. TUC general secretary Paul Nowak, making a spirited defence of the Bill as a means to tackle insecure work at the opening press conference, fielded questions on its failure to address the need for sectoral collective bargaining and exemptions the Unite union says make the ban on fire and rehire a “paper tiger” employers will easily get around. And it wasn’t long before the Cabinet reshuffle prompted by the resignation of deputy prime minister Angela Rayner came up: not only was Rayner seen as one of the Bill’s champions in government, but unions quickly realised the reshuffle has been used to demote or move every single minister who has worked on it. Jonathan Reynolds, who had headed up the business department, has been redeployed; employment rights minister Justin Madders has been sacked. Peter Kyle, the new business secretary, does not inspire much confidence: performers’ union Equity general secretary Paul W Fleming recalled at the Trade Union Co-ordinating Group fringe meeting that as science and technology minister until last week Kyle “was very keen to get into bed with AI companies who are demanding that our members’ work is scrapped, that exceptions [to data protection rules] allow the data mining of our members’ work to train and create AI models.”
