Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro convicted of plotting coup
On Thursday, the Supreme Court’s first chamber reached the necessary majority — three out of five votes — to convict Bolsonaro of five crimes, including attempted coup, attempted abolition of the democratic rule of law, and membership in a criminal organization. Several generals were also convicted for their roles in the attempted uprising. Despite intense pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, the trial proceeded, and the Brazilian court plans to determine the sentences this Friday.

Vessel struck by US military off Venezuela was heading back to shore, AP sources say
In Venezuela, Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello on Thursday accused the U.S. government of murder, characterized its version of events as “a tremendous lie” and questioned how the people on board the targeted vessel were linked to the gang. “And how did they identify them as members of the Tren de Aragua? Did they have, I don’t know, a chip? Did they have a QR code and (the U.S. military) read it from above in the dark?” Cabello said. “They openly confessed to murdering 11 people.”

US officials plan to punish foreigners ‘making light of’ Charlie Kirk death
The statement comes in a wider context of an aggressive crackdown on free speech and dissenting views in the US under the second Trump administration, especially when it comes to campus protests sparked by Israel’s war on Gaza. In a post on X on Thursday morning, the deputy secretary of state, Christopher Landau, wrote that “foreigners who glorify violence and hatred are not welcome visitors to our country” and said he had directed consular officials to “undertake appropriate action” against those deemed to be “praising, rationalizing, or making light of” Kirk’s death on social media.

Josh Kraft, son of billionaire Patriots owner, drops out of Boston mayor’s race against Michelle Wu
As of the end of August, Kraft had outspent Wu, $5.5 million to about $1.1 million, thanks in large part to more than $5 million in loans from the candidate to his campaign. Wu won around 72% of the vote in Tuesday’s election, compared with Kraft’s 23%. In an email statement Thursday night, Wu said she respects Kraft’s decision and thanked him “for caring about our city deeply enough to want to make it better.”

Salvador Allende Last Words to the Nation
Surely this will be the last opportunity for me to address you. The Air Force has bombed the towers of Radio Portales and Radio Corporación. My words do not have bitterness but disappointment. May they be a moral punishment for those who have betrayed their oath: soldiers of Chile, titular commanders in chief, Admiral Merino, who has designated himself Commander of the Navy, and Mr. Mendoza, the despicable general who only yesterday pledged his fidelity and loyalty to the Government, and who also has appointed himself Chief of the Carabineros [national police]. Given these facts, the only thing left for me is to say to workers: I am not going to resign! Placed in a historic transition, I will pay for loyalty to the people with my life. And I say to them that I am certain that the seed which we have planted in the good conscience of thousands and thousands of Chileans will not be shriveled forever. They have strength and will be able to dominate us, but social processes can be arrested neither by crime nor force. History is ours, and people make history. Workers of my country: I want to thank you for the loyalty that you always had, the confidence that you deposited in a man who was only an interpreter of great yearnings for justice, who gave his word that he would respect the Constitution and the law and did just that. At this definitive moment, the last moment when I can address you, I wish you to take advantage of the lesson: foreign capital, imperialism, together with the reaction, created the climate in which the Armed Forces broke their tradition, the tradition taught by General Schneider and reaffirmed by Commander Araya, victims of the same social sector which will today be in their homes hoping, with foreign assistance, to retake power to continue defending their profits and their privileges.

September 11 in Chile: How Reformism Disarmed the Working Class in the Face of CIA-Backed Coup
Chile’s September 11 marked the end of an experiment that had begun three years earlier when Allende was elected president. As a democratic socialist, he promised a peaceful and democratic “transition towards socialism” in the framework of the country’s institutions. The governing coalition, Popular Unity, carried out nationalizations of copper mines and the telecommunications and chemical industries, hurting U.S. corporations. Both Chilean and American capitalists did everything they could to sabotage the economy, and encourage fascist terror. But Allende remained unconcerned about the danger of a coup. Chile had a long tradition of bourgeois democracy, and Allende assumed that the military would respect the actions of a democratically elected government. On June 29, 1973, just a few months before the coup, an army unit surrounded La Moneda with tanks in an attempt to seize power. After this Tanquetazo was defeated by loyalist troops, many Chilean workers realized that the time had come to arm themselves and take power away from the capitalists. Allende, however, told them to trust the officers’ corps. After June 29, he said in a speech to the nation: “trust your government. Go home and kiss your wives and children in the name of Chile.” He even named Pinochet as commander-in-chief, hoping to keep the loyalty of that part of the military. Allende also approved an Arms Control Law which allowed the military to disarm workers.

Few thoughts on democratic socialism - Introduction to a pamphlet on class struggle under Allende‘s government, Chile 1973
We recently listened to Bhaskar Sunkara presenting his new book with the modest title ‘The Socialist Manifesto‘ at Red Emma Bookshop1 and Novara Media. For various reasons which we’ll talk a bit more about later on, we think that parliamentary politics are a dead-end. But we appreciated Sunkara‘s talk as being one of the most concise presentations of current political positions which propose a parliamentary road to socialism. We appreciate the effort to look for strategies which examine all tools that the working class has in their struggle against exploitation. We can understand the attraction of this type of strategical thinking - instead of clinging to utopias or preaching stale positions the new generation of ‘democratic socialists‘ tries to grapple with what‘s in front of us: a weakened labour movement, a detached social movement, a capitalist crisis, a de-legitimatised political class, the emergence of small-scale and potentially cooperative enterprises and a re-emergence of a parliamentary left which is not afraid to use the word socialism. The challenge seems to be to create the right relation between movements from below and the parliamentary institutions which could secure and expand gains that movements have achieved in struggle. Sunkara looks at historical examples - from the Russian Revolution to Swedish social democracy in the post-World War Two period to find some clues. We don‘t have the time to properly engage with the main arguments here and now. Instead we want to refer to a pamphlet written by comrades of ours about class struggle and the social democratic government under Allende in Chile in 1973. Chile is one of many examples in history that shows us that the relation between working class movements and left governments is more complicated than the often mechanistic picture of force (movement) and container/stabiliser (government). We can see that the initial social reforms were introduced by a right-wing government, which failed to contain class struggle. When Allende took over he had a hard time to keep workers‘ and poor peoples‘ struggles under control - struggles which might well have been encouraged by the incoming left government. Allende feared that the local bourgeoisie and international imperialist forces would use the social turmoil as an excuse for intervention. International price developments, in particular of mining products, curbed the scope for material concessions towards striking workers. Allende’s policies towards the proletarian unrest - which ranged from concessions to military repression - undermined and literally disarmed the working class. When the local military, backed by the CIA, went in for the kill, the resistance was already weakened. This paradoxical relationship between class movements and left governments is not something peculiar to Chile - Robert Brenner describes it as a general paradox of social democracy.

>September 11 in Chile: How Reformism Disarmed the Working Class in the Face of CIA-Backed Coup
Thanks News Anon. Good to post this rather than the countless boring slop articles that mindlessly glazes Allende's government. Allende undermined the class struggle and his revisionism disarmed the workers ideologically and literally. In such a state, the workers were completely unprepared to defend even bourgeois democracy in the face of imperialism and fascism.

Recommend folks read this book on the subject as well.
