Southern Indian state achieves single-digit infant mortality with no urban–rural divide
In what is being described as an outstanding achievement for an Indian state, the Left-ruled southern state of Kerala recorded an infant mortality rate (IMR) of just 5 (per 1,000 live births), as per the latest report published by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India (ORGI). The IMR 5 is five times lower than the national IMR of 25 and better than most developed countries, such as the US, which recorded an IMR of 5.6 last year. IMR is used as a health indicator for the number of deaths of children below one year of age per 1,000 live births. Lower IMR indicates better access to healthcare and is a significant indicator for development in any country.

Australian and Papua New Guinea’s militaries to be integrated under new security pact
The deal will allow the nations’ citizens to serve in either militaries, with Australia offering citizenship as an incentive for Papua New Guineans to enlist in its armed forces. There is growing Western hostility to Chinese influence in the region. Three Pacific island nations have changed their allegiances from Taiwan to Beijing since 2019 and China is also providing police training in Fiji, Kiribati, Samoa, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.

Students killed at Myanmar boarding school as junta escalates air war
Children were killed and injured at the boarding school in Kyauktaw Township in Myanmar's restive Rakhine state, the U.N. children's agency UNICEF said in a statement. It did not say how many were killed in the incident, but the Arakan Army, a militia battling the military in the western state, said at least 19, aged between 15 and 21, had died. Reuters could not independently verify the reports, as internet and mobile services in parts of Rakhine have been cut off by the Myanmar junta and attempts to reach Kyauktaw residents were unsuccessful.

From Telegram to trenches: The Russian page luring Jordanians into war
Saleem had worked at a restaurant until a prolapsed disc left him unable to continue. With his finances in free fall, he turned to Telegram - tipped off by a friend who’d heard of “easy” jobs in Russia. The battalion he joined includes fighters from across the Arab world: Jordan, Iraq, Yemen, Syria and others. According to information gathered by Middle East Eye, many are recruited through Telegram groups advertising non-combat roles in the Russian army, with promises of land, high pay and fast-track citizenship. But once in Russia, the bait-and-switch begins.

British soldier stands trial over 1972 Bloody Sunday killings
The trial of the sole British soldier charged with murder over the 1972 "Bloody Sunday" killings of 13 unarmed Catholic civil rights marchers in Northern Ireland began on Monday, over half a century on from one of the defining moments of The Troubles. The soldier, who cannot be identified and is known as Soldier F, is accused of murdering two men and attempting to murder five others when members of a British army regiment opened fire in the mainly Irish nationalist city of Londonderry.

Far right makes biggest gains in German local elections
In the first test of voter sentiment since Mr Merz’s government took power, his conservative party took 33.3 per cent of the vote in Sunday’s elections for councils and mayors in North Rhine-Westphalia, while the Social Democrats — for whom the state was long a reliable heartland — took 22.1 per cent, final results showed today. Both parties did slightly worse than the last municipal elections in 2020. But the AfD took 14.5 per cent — a gain of 9.4 per cent. The anti-immigration party is strongest in the former German Democratic Republic, but Sunday’s showing underlined its arrival as a force in the west as well. In February’s national election, AfD took 20.8 per cent of the vote to finish second and become the largest opposition party. In North Rhine-Westphalia, it took 16.8 per cent.

Illegal gold mining is fueling a ‘mercury boom’ in Mexico, poisoning people and the environment
Soaring international gold prices are driving up the price of mercury, a toxic metal key in illegal gold mining, to all-time highs. While the demand triggers a mining rush in central Mexico, sustaining thousands of miners and their families, it also exposes them and the fragile environment to mercury poisoning. At the same time, this Mexican mercury is fueling illegal gold mining in the Amazon, contaminating large areas and harming both people and the environment.

How Petro got Colombia’s intelligence agency to adopt an anti-imperialist agenda
Instead of working for foreign intelligence agencies, the DNI shifted its focus to domestic issues like corruption, peace, and the physical protection of the president. Among other things, the DNI took over tasks previously overseen by foreign intelligence agencies. “The curation of personnel entering the Dipol (Police Intelligence Directorate) was done by American agencies like the CIA or the FBI. This is now done by the DNI,” a source with direct information told La Silla Vacia. The employment of former M-19 guerrillas stems from Petro’s mistrust of sectors within the security forces and intelligence community, which have long maintained ties to organized crime and paramilitary groups.

TikTok ban in flux as White House announces China-US framework deal
The White House declined to outline the terms of the deal, which was negotiated during trade talks between the two countries in Madrid. The two-day meeting, which wrapped up on Monday, was the latest in a slew of negotiations that began in May. “We’re not going to talk about the commercial terms of the deal. It’s between two private parties, but the commercial terms have been agreed upon,” US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told reporters. Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, who was also part of the trade delegation in Madrid, said China wanted concessions on trade and technology in exchange for agreeing to divest from the popular social media app.

On September 10, in a federal courtroom in Detroit, Chengxuan Han was sentenced to “time served” and remanded to the custody of the US Marshal, whereupon she was immediately deported back to China and banned from reentry. New York’s commuter rail system averts possible strike as unions ask Trump for help
Unionized workers for the Long Island Railroad announced they voted overwhelmingly Monday to authorize their labor leaders to call a strike if an agreement on a new contract isn’t reached. But officials representing locomotive engineers, machinists, signalmen and other train workers said they’ve also asked President Donald Trump to intercede by forming an emergency board that delays the potential for a strike at least for a few more months.

Thousands flagged online for cheering Charlie Kirk's death
The Foundation encourages people to "submit data for Charlie." It sprung up shortly after posts went viral celebrating the Turning Point USA co-founder's killing at an event on a Utah college campus. It claims to be run by "political operatives that have represented major parties and candidates," according to its X account. The group says it is not "doxxing" people, or identifying people by their personal information, but it is creating a database that will be "searchable by general location, employer, and industry type."

After 32 Years of Its Political Disasters, It Is Time to Free Ourselves from the ‘Oslo Accord’ and Return to the National Program: DFLP
On the 32nd anniversary of the signing of the Oslo Accord on 13 September 1993, the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine issued a statement saying: this is an occasion through which our people recall the damage and political disasters it has inflicted, especially the Oslo Accord’s betrayal of the national program and the Declaration of Independence, in favor of a negotiating project that transformed our people’s cause from a struggle for liberation from occupation and settlement into a mere negotiating issue; whose keys and course were held by the occupying state and its biased American mediator. This included exploiting its terms to complete the zionist settler-colonial project, leading to the explicit proclamation of “israel’s” Talmudic state project, and tireless work by all means to undermine the foundations of the national project, the latest being the declaration by the head of the “israeli” fascist junta that there is no place for a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The Democratic Front stated that the Oslo Accord burdened the national situation with a wide range of restrictions.

‘Dot-Com Bubble 2.0’ could burst at any time
With AI mania driving unprecedented investment in the tech sector, Wall Street punters are racing to get a piece of the gold rush. Speculation on the NASDAQ is rampant, tech stock is being inflated well beyond actual profitability, and a horde of crypto-addicted zombie companies has been unleashed upon the markets. A colossal correction is only a matter of time. As we have commented many, many times: capitalism’s organic crisis, which came to a head in the 2008 recession, forced governments to hurl trillions of dollars at the system, followed by trillions more during the COVID-19 pandemic. Overproduction restricted profitable avenues of investment in the real economy (industry, manufacture and so on), meaning much of this capital was left sloshing around with nowhere to go. Combined with ultra-low interest rates, this fed an orgy of speculation on the stock markets, particularly in tech. Investors chased megaprofits by trading shares in loss-leading companies like Netflix and Uber, as well as betting on fads like cryptocurrency and NFTs. But the party couldn’t last. Massive government spending since 2008 (necessary to keep capitalism on life support) provoked an inevitable inflationary crisis in 2022, causing central banks to raise interest rates. With the cheap money tap turned off and investor confidence rocked, tech companies lost billions of dollars. Cryptocurrencies tanked, NFTs became worthless, and the tech-focused NASDAQ stock exchange fell by 30 percent in a week. That, it seemed, was that. The bubble had popped, the crypto craze was over, unprofitable companies would be wiped out in a process of ‘creative destruction’ and new regulatory measures put in place. Yet here we are in 2025: the NASDAQ closed at an all-time high in July, Bitcoin and Ethereum have just notched record values, and regulatory barriers are actually being lowered. How can this be explained? Why didn’t the tech bubble burst when it was ‘supposed’ to?

Decision Time at DSA
DSA members have taken on important roles as rank-and-filers, elected leaders, and staffers in some of the nation’s most combative unions, including helping organize this year’s May Day and Labor Day rallies and marches in hundreds of cities. Chapters across the country have participated in Gaza solidarity actions, anti-ICE (Immigration and Customs Protection) protests, and defense of LGBTQ communities. And DSA is one of the very few organizations where a person can join, pay their dues, and then meaningfully take part in local and national democratic decision-making. All of this means coming to grips with the successes and challenges of DSA’s convention and the decisions it arrived at are critical for grappling with the state of the larger American left. How strong is DSA? Plenty, if you ask Andrew Cuomo. But if DSA is the most influential socialist force in several generations, it remains weak compared to the American socialist movement’s peak. The Socialist Party (SP) cracked 100,000 members in 1912 and the Communist Party (CP) reached 80,000 by 1938, not much bigger than DSA today. But the SP and the CP grew out of decades of class struggle involving millions of workers in pitched battles against capital, from the Lawrence, Massachusetts, strikes, led by the Industrial Workers of the World, to the sit-down strikes led by the Congress of Industrial Organizations that forced General Motors to recognize the United Auto Workers (UAW). DSA members are overwhelmingly working-class, if still concentrated in limited sectors. But even as membership grows, we remain to a large extent an organization of people who are detached from their surrounding communities and the broader working class.
