Tony Cardwell, president of the BMWED, said his union rejected similar offer from Union Pacific a couple weeks ago because the railroad wouldn’t agree to protect workers if it decides to lease more of its tracks to short-line railroads to handle the final deliveries as it has already done in a couple locations. He said what good is a promise of a job if it means either taking a pay cut to go to work for a smaller railroad or moving across the country to keep a job with Union Pacific.

America’s Split-Screen Economy
“Americans are spending like never before,” boasted the Donald Trump White House in a press release on Wednesday. “Retail sales are booming — up 5% over last year, far outpacing inflation — as Americans spend in record amounts.” What the press release neglected to mention, however, is that the top 10 percent of American earners were responsible for almost half of consumer spending in the second quarter. Their record-high 49.2 percent spending share is keeping the economy looking healthy by some metrics. But stepping back, it’s hard to see good health in an economy where job hiring is slowing down, debt delinquencies are on the rise, and luxury spending by a small cohort is so lavish that it artificially obscures the belt-tightening of a vastly larger cohort. Simply put, the top 10 percent are able to spend so much because they have so much more than everyone else. According to the latest Federal Reserve data, the top 10 percent of US households by wealth control 62.6 percent of all household assets. The top 1 percent alone hold a staggering 28 percent of total wealth. This concentration becomes even more stark when considering the other end of the distribution. While the wealthiest tenth of Americans owns nearly two-thirds of all assets, the bottom half of households, representing over 160 million Americans, hold just over 5 percent of total wealth. Consumer spending is no insignificant matter; it accounts for 70 percent of the American economy. In other words, it appears that the main thing keeping Trump’s economy in decent shape at the moment is inequality itself. When consumer spending is removed from the equation, the state of the American economy under Trump looks much weaker. Last month, the White House declared that “our nation is witnessing an unprecedented surge in manufacturing investments and job creation.” But on closer look, neither claim holds up.

The mega-rich and their representatives, meanwhile, are living on another planet from the rest of us. In Ukraine, European leaders are helping to prolong the carnage, sending ever-more bombs and missiles to Kyiv, despite every indication that Zelensky’s NATO-backed regime has been defeated. In the Middle East, Netanyahu is pushing ahead with his murderous campaign against the Palestinian people. And despite their occasional display of crocodile tears, politicians in London and Washington are continuing to aid and abet this slaughter: financially, militarily, and diplomatically. This imperialist aggression abroad translates into intensified austerity and repression back home. Welfare is being slashed to pay for warfare, with Starmer’s Labour attempting to make pensioners and disabled people foot the bill for the British establishment’s rearmament drive. And thousands of pro-Palestine activists are being arrested and branded as ‘terrorists’ for daring to oppose the genocide. Meanwhile, the real criminals – the warmongers in Westminster and the White House – remain at large.

Browder, with his revisionism, was trying to fasten a system of Right-wing bourgeois liberalism upon our Party; a liberalism so conservative that on many questions it put us far to the Right of Roosevelt, of the liberal press, and of the main sections of the labor movement. This revisionism has nothing in common with Marxism-Leninism, being a complete abandonment of its basic principles. A. Browder's line is a rejection of the Marxian economic doctrines. Browder has developed bourgeois theories of the liquidation of the capitalist cyclical and general crises; he rejects Marx’ theory of surplus value and of the exploitation of the workers. Thus, for the past two years our Party has made no criticism whatever of capitalism as a system of human exploitation, nor has it challenged the blood-wrung profits of the employers. Instead, we have heard many comrades, without rebuke from Browder, talking about our alleged obligation to guarantee the employers, already the richest in the world, a so-called fair profit. That such shameful nonsense should be heard in a Communist organization! When Browder adopted so glibly the slogan of “free enterprise,” he accepted in practice most of bourgeois economics along with it. With his great faith in capitalism he outdoes even such enthusiastic bourgeois economists as Chase, Hanson and Johnston.
