Million-strong general strike blocks Italy for Palestine
In Rome alone, 300,000 demonstrators occupied the city’s main railway hub before marching through the streets. “The call came from Genoa’s dockworkers, and here we are: we’ve blocked everything,” the protesters proclaimed. Among those leading the crowd were firefighters’ union representatives, who told il manifesto: “First responders will never be complicit in genocide, and we are protesting a government that is entrapping us in rearmament.”

Scottish government urges support for Housing Bill but tenants say it ‘totally concedes’ landlords' demands
The union argues that the decision to exempt build-to-let, mid-market rent, and purpose-built student accommodation and allow rents to rise up to one per cent above inflation was “conceded to the demands of landlords,” despite overwhelming opposition from respondents to the public consultation on the Bill.

The social elevator is breaking down in Spain, one of the richest countries with the greatest inequality of opportunity
The report To Have and Have Not: How to Close the Opportunity Gap, published Monday, indicates that around a quarter of income inequality is due to these circumstances of origin. But that’s the OECD average, as the magnitude varies greatly by country. And in Spain, the burden of inheritance far exceeds this threshold, reaching over 35%. The conclusion is clear: a person’s starting point in life continues to determine their economic future.

Turkey to train Niger army in fight against militant groups
According to the source, a small number of Turkish commandos and special forces who in the past served and gained experience in Syria and Iraq will be deployed to Niger, where they will assist the army with training as part of the fight against the Islamic State and al-Qaeda. Two people familiar with the matter said that at least four battalions will provide training and advisory support in Niger, though Turkish forces will not directly participate in combat. The deployment does not require Turkish parliamentary approval, since the troops will be present in a limited “visiting” capacity and will not establish bases or secure territory.

Meta launches super PAC to fight AI regulation
As the federal government fully embraces AI and looks unlikely to pass significant tech policy regulation any time soon, busy state houses are tech companies' biggest problem. Meta's nonfederal PAC — which will be run by longtime Republican operative Brian Baker and Democratic consulting firm Hilltop Public Solutions — will focus on electing state candidates from both parties.

Local networks won’t air Jimmy Kimmel’s show: Nexstar and Sinclair maintain boycott over Charlie Kirk comments
“We made a decision last week to preemptJimmy Kimmel Live!following what ABC referred to as Mr. Kimmel’s ‘ill-timed and insensitive’ comments at a critical time in our national discourse,” Nexstar said in a statement. “We stand by that decision pending assurance that all parties are committed to fostering an environment of respectful, constructive dialogue in the markets we serve.” Sinclair issued a similar statement: “Beginning Tuesday night, Sinclair will be preempting Jimmy Kimmel Live! across our ABC affiliate stations and replacing it with news programming” the company explained late Monday. “Discussions with ABC are ongoing as we evaluate the show’s potential return.”

Working-Class Americans Are Hurting—And Traditional Statistics Aren’t Showing How Much
As reported by Bloomberg on Monday, Ludwig believes the CPI tracks too many goods that are either luxury purchases or are only bought sporadically. A relevant measure of inflation, he told the outlet, should primarily include goods that are essential to living, such as groceries, housing, healthcare, and energy.

Amazon Wielded ‘Overwhelming’ Control Over Contract Workers, Labor Board Says
While the case involves a small group of drivers at a contractor Amazon has stopped working with, a ruling in the Teamsters’ favor could help establish a precedent and encourage unionization at the company. Delivery workers are responsible for a crucial aspect of Amazon’s business, and by not directly employing them, the company has shielded itself from costs and liabilities associated with their work.

971 - The Years of Whatever feat. Will Sommer (9/22/25)(Chapo Trap House)
Will Sommer of The Bulwark returns to Chapo to talk about the right’s reaction to the assassination of Charlie Kirk as well as his funeral proceedings in Arizona. We recap the Groyper War that preceded the assassination and the pressure it put on Kirk to move right, as well as the conspiracies surrounding his shooting. Was Israel involved? Why was there no exit wound? Did Charlie have a late-in-life conversion to Catholicism? And which faction of the right will be able to define the man’s legacy?

The Return of Drug War Imperialism
The Trump administration is escalating U.S. drug wars in Latin America as a cover for imperialism. While the administration directs a military buildup in the Caribbean, killing people who it claims are drug smugglers, it is preparing to intervene in Latin American countries for the purpose of opening their markets to U.S. businesses. The administration’s priority is gaining access to Latin American resources, a main focus of its foreign policy, just as the highest-level officials have indicated. “Increasingly, on geopolitical issue after geopolitical issue, it is access to raw material and industrial capacity that is at the core both of the decisions that we’re making and the areas that we’re prioritizing,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in June.

Free Speech — At a Price by Michael Parenti
What does it mean to say we have freedom of speech? Many of us think free speech is a right enjoyed by everyone in our society. In fact, it does not exist as an abstract right. There is no such thing as a freedom detached from the socio-economic reality in which it might find a place. Speech is a form of interpersonal behavior. This means it occurs in a social context, in homes, workplaces, schools, and before live audiences or vast publics via the print and electronic media. Speech is intended to reach the minds of others. This is certainly true of political speech. But some kinds of political speech are actively propagated before mass audiences and other kinds are systematically excluded.
