Madagascar president dissolves government amidst deadly protests
Protesters gathered at Antananarivo’s main university on Monday before attempting to march into the city centre, according to footage broadcast by the local television channel 2424.MG. Police fired tear gas to disperse the demonstrators, as authorities enforced a dusk-to-dawn curfew that has been in place since last week. Israeli troops kill at least 31 Palestinians in Gaza as Trump peace proposal raises questions
Hamas announced it would review the proposal with group members and other Palestinian factions before reaching a decision. While the proposal offers an end to the fighting, guarantees the flow of humanitarian aid and promises reconstruction, the Palestinian militant group will have to disarm, something it has rejected in the past. Also, Gaza and its more than 2 million Palestinians would be put under international control for the foreseeable future.

Unemployment hits 14-year high as Germany waits for Merz’s stimulus
the local headlines are being conspicuously dominated by national champions shedding staff. Earlier this week, Lufthansa said it will cut 4,000 administrative jobs by 2030. The news came only days after engineering giant Robert Bosch said it would cut an additional 13,000 positions by 2030, after announcing 5,550 layoffs in November last year. Automaker Volkswagen and Germany’s second-largest lender, Commerzbank, announced significant job cuts earlier this year.

National Flood Insurance Program is set to expire Tuesday, halting new policies and some home loans
NFIP’s last long-term reauthorization was in 2012. Since the end of 2017, its continuation has depended on 33 short-term reauthorizations. The last time the program lapsed was for 13 hours in March 2024, according to the Congressional Research Service. Lawmakers, industry groups and policyholders have long called for NFIP reform to give the program stability and to address issues with floodplain mapping, affordability and solvency.

Kentucky has kicked people off food benefits using data that doesn’t tell the full story
In the last decade, disqualifications in Kentucky rose from fewer than 100 in 2015 to over 1,800 in 2023. And more than 300 others have been accused of selling or misusing their benefits since January 2024, according to records obtained by Kentucky Public Radio. Another Franklin County judge in 2023 ordered the cabinet to stop disqualifying individuals based solely on transactional data, but since the decision, at least three lawsuits allege the health agency continues to bring such cases.

Defy-ID: Against State Control (2005)
At the time I'm writing this, the corporate media is in full throttle with attempts to idolise the exiting Tony Blair. According to a piece propagandistically entitled 'Poll shows he will leave with voters’ respect’; "Mr Blair will be remembered as a force for change in Britain… by 60% of all voters”1 . Those who have been fighting against the current government’s massive campaign to centralise power and bring down repression on those who challenge it would certainly agree that Blair’s government was a force for change, Whilst anarchists recognise that this is a project of the state, not linked to any particular politician or party, it should be recognised that the current Labour government under Blair has been particularly successful in overturning all kinds of relative freedoms. Because Blair is particularly skilled at statecraft he has been able to present the state’s agenda in a way that cashes in on prejudices and ignorance already present. The current government has capitalised on terrorist attacks, socially-excluded youth, and even identity theft to create a climate of fear, in which the government may do as it wishes with the excuse that it is 'protecting’ the terrified masses. As anarchists have argued, the governments only vary in how successful they are in grabbing more power for themselves, and as long as there is a state we will have to defend our efforts towards a free society against it.

New Cuban Report Confirms US Blockade is War
Cuba’s foreign ministry on September 17 released the nation’s annual report on adverse effects of the lengthy U.S. economic blockade of Cuba. It does so ahead of the yearly vote in the United Nations General Assembly on a Cuban resolution stating the “necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States against Cuba.” Voting takes place on October 28-29. For 32 years, member states have overwhelmingly approved Cuba’s resolution. At times recently, the U.S. and Israel have been alone in rejecting it. The 55-page Report – accessible here – is remarkable for its detailed and far-ranging description of disarray and distress caused by the blockade. It exposes the cruelty and lawlessness of U.S. intrusion in the lives of a sovereign people. This year’s version of the Report is convincing as to the urgency of opposing this U.S. policy. Showing that the blockade kills people, it casts the blockade as war. Struggle against the blockade might gain new strength with a new focus on the issue of peace over war.

Leon Trotsky: Why Marxists Oppose Individual Terrorism
Our class enemies are in the habit of complaining about our terrorism. What they mean by this is rather unclear. They would like to label all the activities of the proletariat directed against the class enemy’s interests as terrorism. The strike, in their eyes, is the principal method of terrorism. The threat of a strike, the organisation of strike pickets, an economic boycott of a slave-driving boss, a moral boycott of a traitor from our own ranks—all this and much more they call terrorism. If terrorism is understood in this way as any action inspiring fear in, or doing harm to, the enemy, then of course the entire class struggle is nothing but terrorism. And the only question remaining is whether the bourgeois politicians have the right to pour out their flood of moral indignation about proletarian terrorism when their entire state apparatus with its laws, police and army is nothing but an apparatus for capitalist terror! However, it must be said that when they reproach us with terrorism, they are trying—although not always consciously—to give the word a narrower, less indirect meaning. The damaging of machines by workers, for example, is terrorism in this strict sense of the word. The killing of an employer, a threat to set fire to a factory or a death threat to its owner, an assassination attempt, with revolver in hand, against a government minister—all these are terrorist acts in the full and authentic sense. However, anyone who has an idea of the true nature of international Social Democracy ought to know that it has always opposed this kind of terrorism and does so in the most irreconcilable way. Why? ‘Terrorising’ with the threat of a strike, or actually conducting a strike is something only industrial workers can do. The social significance of a strike depends directly upon first, the size of the enterprise or the branch of industry that it affects, and second, the degree to which the workers taking part in it are organised, disciplined, and ready for action. This is just as true of a political strike as it is for an economic one. It continues to be the method of struggle that flows directly from the productive role of the proletariat in modern society.
