>To be clear, hip-hop is still the most listened-to genre of music by far, and it’s still growing. According to Luminate, it has a 26.8% share of U.S. recorded music consumption; the next closest genre is rock at 20%. But that hip-hop number was 27.7% in 2021 and reached a peak of 28.2% in 2020. After a heightened growth period in the 2010s, hip-hop’s growth has slowed down.

What's up? Hip hop only had 1 album in the top 10 this year, rappers tours are getting cancelled, most mainstream rappers are dropping trash albums?

Is hip hop declining in popularity? and if so why? is it tiktok making pop/kpop popular? or is it just running out of creative juice as a genre?

Saw this stupid click bait video recommended to me on youtube too.
>To be clear, hip-hop is still the most listened-to genre of music by far, and it’s still growing
>dying
>it has a 26.8% share of U.S. recorded music consumption

The share is still too high. 1/3rd of all music listened to and it's all a rehash of Hip Hop from the 90s. uygha, uygha, kill a uygha, smack a bitch, sell some drugs.

>Hip hop only had 1 album in the top 10 this year,

Hip hop music has been about singles and the uygha of the week for awhile.

i think people are talking about mainstream popularity, not the fact that there will probably always be good underground artists.

genres get played out. It happens.

>recorded music consumption
what counts as 1 consume for music tho? If a song is good I'm going to listen to it more than once. If it's good enough to keep coming back to I'm going to save it to a local medium. Also I tend to discover music through 3rd party clients like newpipe, since platforms disincentivize playing directly from the platform, and through fanworks, which don't count toward the official stats.

hip hop isnt dying but it is declining because younger Gen Z's like jersey club, pop/kpop, and taylor swift.

they aid the same thing back.in 2005-2011.

And you say that like its a bad thing.
And Gen Z has their own epoch of rap with the trap and drill shit.

I wish rap music would grow out of gangster themes. It did or a time back 2008 - 2013 with LMFAO, Black Eyed Peas, Pitbull and whatnot with house music.

trap is old, it goes back to the 90s but it was a bit more obscure back then so some people think it's more recent

maybe check out the whole hexd/surge/sigilkore scene, tbh there still some gangster themes as you call them but the instrumentals and overall aesthetic is completely different.

Speaking of obscure Hip-Hop artists, a great one is Jazz Spastiks. Sucks that they aren't more popular. If you like Hip-Hop from the 90s, you'll probably love these dudes, although I think any music fan of any era can enjoy their shit.

Some songs of theirs (these songs are some of my favorite songs):

Drake's music is kinda fun tho
He raps like how young people talk even though he's like an old ass millennial at this point
Also no one gives a shit about "inauthenticity" anymore
Plasticness is the wave

hip hop is too limiting, i haven't listened to that shit since i was 16 or something
i moved onto house, techno, jazz, etc.

Recommend me some hip-hop along these lines. I usually listen to instrumental hip-hop because I grew tired of gangsta rap and its derivatives.

exactly. Hip hop wamts to remain ghetto fab, rapping about thug life problems and "coming up". Nothing is allowed to be artsy or purely fun.

Its just punk for blacks.

Rap music was best left as jazz poetry

Maybe one reason is that a lot of young upcoming rappers who were supposed to establish themselves in the industry either died or went to prison (XXXTentacion, Juice Wrld, Lil Peep, Pop Smoke, Tay K).
It just feels stagnating and repetitive now

Reminder the album in the OP came out 17 years ago kek.

Hip Hop should die. It's amazing it staid around this long. Can't just keep on doing the same counter-culture shit forever and have it still be fresh. Hip Hop should be as dead as Grunge, Punk, Metal etc.

Lol they play hip hop instrumentals on that NPR marketplace show everyday. They even play Mobb Deep kek.

>Can't just keep on doing the same counter-culture shit forever and have it still be fresh.
Was thinking about that too recently. Popular music has been nonstop counter culture for the past half century. Now there is no more culture to counter kek.
