I would imagine getting your ears pinched by a small strip of plastic would be uncomfortable. Picrel has a clip sitting securely on top of your ear, you may only feel them weighing down your ears after multiple hours of use and they're cheap as well. The same principles actually apply to bras and camisoles as well, where thinner straps are often more uncomfortable, because they don't distribute the weight as much and can shift more often.

Either the headphones are genuinely shitty or prolonged earpod use has damaged your hearing. I never liked using in-ear plugs, they never fit comfortably into my ear, so i moved away from them as soon as i could.
