Westerners will always have a flawed understanding cause they apply a flawed understanding of American racism, even though it has nothing in common. The original settlers and policymakers of Israel were largely from a minority of Jews who had served in various European Armies. The state they developed reflected, them came the Ashkenazi jews who after World War II who were very different. They were European Jews, but they did not come from those martial cultures. Many were secular and not even religiously Jewish. And then you had the Mizrahim who had suffered nothing like the Holocaust, but had suffered centuries of mostly state humiliation and never had a secular period. So these two radically different Jewish immigrant groups were at odds with each other and they segregated. But now it's complicated. Most Israelis are of mixed Mizrahim and Ashkenazi backgrounds, but there are still general Ashkenazi and Mizrahim "cultures." So if you are a secular Jew, you are marked as Ashkenazi, even if your grandparents are from Morocco. And if you are a deeply religious Jew you are marked as Mizrahim, even if your grandparents are Polish. This nuance is necessary to understand Israeli society.
