One of the more annoying trends is a sort of contrarian consumption where some big media conglomerate produces garbage, but it's garbage that offends the other side of the culture war, so a bunch of dumbasses support and consume it. Combined with the phenomenon of "hate watching," it made what was the creation of what were essentially bait products decently profitable, but I think this trend might be dying out with Snow White flopping so badly.

The worst case of this might be Star Trek Discovery, if only because of the degree to which it shits on the very series its based on. Star Trek is a series based on the idea that humanity gets its shit together, solves all its nasty problems and goes out exploring the stars for the noble goals of science and exploration. Discovery tears all that down. The Federation was just another evil colonial empire all along. No, a better society isn't possible and you're a stupid, naive baby if you ever thought it was. The only thing you can hope for is to be on the right side of the fence, or for the intervention of a heroic individual if you aren't. It gives some nods to progressive values, but all that is so much virtue signalling in the greater context of a story which posits that a better society is not possible. It is the very essence of reaction, and no amount of chuds getting triggered by it changes that.

I'm a part of a few Star Trek groups, and I've come to the conclusion that there's basically two types of Discovery (and NuTrek) fans

1) Literal "consume product and get excited for next product" brand loyalists. Idiots who will literally buy anything that has the fucking Star Trek brand on it, and actually take pride in that fact. One of the reasons why bad adaptations, remakes and reboots that make egregious changes from the source material is because these companies think "fandoms" are a bunch of stupid rubes who will buy literally any old garbage so long as the fucking brand is attached to it, and this sort of person proves that, to a certain extent, they're right.

2) Idiots who saw that the Critical Drinker or whoever-the-fuck reactionary YouTuber made a video hating on the series and that meant that the good and progressive thing is to be a Discovery and NuTrek mega fan no matter what the actual content is.

It's stupid and I hate it, and hopefully its about to die and never come back.
