most desires are artificially created by advertising and therefore "let people do what they want no matter how unhealthy it is for them" is a lie. am i an asshole for thinking this?
i don't believe advertising is some magical jedi mind trick shit that plants desires in your unconscious but i think it can cause desires in people in some very straightforward ways, sometimes by literally lying to you about the advantages and drawbacks of something.
but even beyond that there's the simple matter of controlling demand by obscuring alternatives. people don't like mcdonald's because they've tasted every possible burger and concluded that mcdonald's appeals more to their innate "personal taste". they just prefer it among the limited options that are accessible to them and then get used to it so that they're often uninterested in other burgers even when more options do become accessible.
so isn't it actually pretty justified to criticize people's personal desires, whether it's food or hobbies or fetishes or drugs or etc? and even to advocate for government intervention in these matters in the case of really unhealthy things like hard drugs and poor nutrition?

No libidinal desires emerge on its own. Everything you desire have its roots in other people even before the advent of advertisement, since desire is memetic (we realize our desire from socialization with other people). What advertisement does is to churn this process in an industrial and repetitive way.

To use an analogy OP if i lied to you about the benefit of NoFap and you become a NoFap afficionado then the reaction shouldn't be to prevent you from doing NoFap and forcing you to jerk off, that's absurd, the reaction should be to penalize me for telling lies

i'm not saying all conditioned desires are wrong, just that "let people do what they want" doesn't seem like a good excuse for things that are obviously unhealthy, like cigarettes. and i'm not saying the government banning cigarettes is necessarily a GOOD solution, but it doesn't seem inherently immoral either.
also advertisement seems particularly insidious compared to other things that create desire because it's deliberate, targeted and streamlined.

>Idealism is what's really killing people.
So you're saying that an idea is responsible for shaping the world to be the way that it is? Interesting…

>we had fascism
Fascism is a mode of governance of capitalism, its not an ideology.

>artificially created

fascism is an ideology tied exclusively to the early 20th century retard
