Christians believing that the Bible is the literal word of God is a relatively recent and largely Protestant phenomenon. The Church has generally recognized the divinely-inspired human authorship of the Bible. It was traditionally supposed to be inerrant truth, but from from a human under divine inspiration and not a word for word dictation from God, like the Koran is in Islam.
