Returning to this topic and thinking about it more broadly, academic philosophy is almost completely disconnected from Asian thought. In Asia philosophy courses are split between West vs East. I remember doing a paper on the philosophy of Buddhism in school with the help of a family friend who was an academic philosopher, well he ended up doing the bulk of the research because I was truly out of my depth. The resulting paper was like a cliff's notes version of the early history of Buddhism. Nothing about all the sects and the internal debates within the various traditions. He was out of his depth too. And I remember even after all that, I am still absolutely clueless about Buddhism. I think the error I made was that Buddhism did not originate as philosophy, Buddhism is in fact a religion like Christianity, and if you don't understand the religion in the first place, you can't really talk about the philosophical arguments used to justify the religion, like trying to talk about Thomas Aquinas without understanding Christianity.
