It's easy once you grasp the idea of parallel play. You don't have to always maintain it, just occasionally pop in and see what they're up to and be active enough that if they do the same you have something to share.

It‘s like having another person who puts up an act here and there and to maintain the friendship you will need to provide some utility for them while also understanding their self-image and what offends them to not unwittingly step on their toes. A lot of hassle with little in return unless you are very similar or validation of another person is that valuable to you.

Pretty much all the responses to the op seem fairly reasonable and true. Friendship really depends on the people involved and their personalities and what you're willing to tolerate at least in my opinion. Personally I've had few close friends in my life and the ones that I was closer to were usually family members and even then I'm not particularly close to them.
