Likeable is pretty subjective. Lots of really awful characters are still likeable because they're entertaining, not because you relate to them or would want anything to do with them if they were a real person. If you don't like the protagonist for some reason or another it usually makes the story less engaging, but there are plenty of stories where the protagonist is a weak point made up for by the rest.
