the majority of the global prolitariat is religious and a marxist-leninist approach to revolution should be rooted in class struggle.
while religion has historically served ruling-class interests, it also emerges from the real suffering and alienation of the working class.
when marx called religion “the opium of the people,” he was not just superficially condemning faith, but identifying it as a response to suffering in a world devoid of meaning and justice. religion, in our sense, is both a symptom of oppression and a coping mechanism for those experiencing it. it persists because it fulfills real social and emotional needs under capitalism. the task of revolutionaries is not to mock or suppress these beliefs, but to transform the conditions that give rise to them.

The old Marxists pulled a fast one by saying religious feeling was due to class society, when religion (or spiritualism) predates class society. Socialism migh solve some problems, but it won't solve grief, the fear of death, accidents, the frustrations of being an animal. Not to mention how humans seem ready made for woo woo beliefs, seeing faces and agency everywhere.
