Why do people defend Pol Pot?

He was barely even a communist. In fact he was backed by the United States and his reign only ended when he was defeated by the Vietnamese. If your a communist there is no reason to defend him.

Wasn't he backed by the US after he lost? It was only to antagonize Vietnam and even then China was even bigger backer of him since they also had bad feelings towards Vietnam.
