I think it's just his idea of what Greek paganism is like is simpler than his idea of what Japanese paganism is like. With Shintoism you're introduced head first with arches that are portals or something and everything's built without nails and there's fish hanging from people's windows for some reason, while greek stuff you just have a bunch of gacha characters going around having sex with animals and getting into loony tunes-esque quarrels.
