What exactly are you supposed to wear to the gym? Especially as a skinny guy, with not a lot to show off - also, what kinda trainers are optimal for the gym? Running shoes?

Wear t-shirt and shorts
Wear flat sole shoes without heel unless you're going to do primarily cardio or Oly lifts.

Gyms are gated communities for exercise. I'd say just dress in something flexible and breathable and go to a calisthenics park if available instead.
