I ultimately use W11, but went in and ripped a shitload of stuff out. I tried Linux at first but I couldn't get proper driver support for all my LEDs and ethernet. Which was really wild. I'm not saying use Windows again, it's viable but you're gonna have to rip its guts out and stop updating it. Also make sure there are Linux drivers for all your hardware.

It kinda depends on what your doing, but I'd second Linux Mint as a good option for a first distro. The whole experience is very polished and it tries to feel close to Windows.

You may also want to learn how to put your home directory under a separate partition. This helps you switch distros later.

Lastly, MAKE A BACKUP OF EVERYTHING YOU CARE ABOUT.

Every other distro is either irrelevant or an ofshoot of those. For example, Linux Mint is great but it's just modified Ubuntu, and LMDE is also great but it's Debian, and that's what I use. I'm considering switching to Fedora just to experiment with it sometime in the future.
If you're schizo, it has to be either Arch of Debian because they have no telemetry. Ubuntu and Fedora are enterprise distros so they're not safe for paranoids. However, Arch and Debian come naked and you have to install drivers and set up them, which takes a while and a little bit of know-how and patience.
