Marxists don't care much about equality, but social democrats believe all people should be treated equally. This does not mean that all people are equal. It's a prescriptive, rather than descriptive claim. Some people are smarter than others, some people are stronger than others, some people are nicer than others, but everyone should have their needs met, even if they are stupid or weak or mean.

In my opinion, the vast majority of humans are awful people, but they deserve to live happy and free lives anyway.
