This guy was the ruler of the entire fucking universe, he genocided literal millions of worlds and subjugated likely billions more, killed several of goku’s friends and tormented every single fucker he crossed paths with just for the sake of it.

The only reason why dragon ball isn’t invincible tier levels of fucked up at this threshold is the lack of blood, injuries, and gore in the game. Otherwise, this series—especially this maniac—is far more over the top.

I didn't read the manga post-Z but it is in fact gorier there, Gohan's slaughter of the Cell Jrs for example

The difference being how Invincible spends a lot of time going into Vitrumite culture and how it personally effects its soldiers whereas Frieza was always conceived as goofy capitalist villain number 35
It's a lot harder for me to be personally horrified by something so inhuman as something painfully human likes the Viltrumites are and while you could argue Vegeta's place in the arc serves that purpose that's more the exception to the rule

Nah. The sheer vileness of freiza is nothing spectacular and knowing that there are people like him make him far more (unfortunately) realistic. There are so many mentally weak people that do awful things purely because they are not strong enough to be better or view themselves as being responsible for poor decisions.

Like fuck, apparently the reason why the freiza force exterminates entire planets just to sell off the celestial bodies was inspired by how the author of the series saw real estate speculators as people that would well “evict and sell off homes.” Freiza was also written at the time of the Japanese economic collapse on top of this.

Frieza is my favorite Dragon Ball character. Delightful to watch every time he is on the screen. Also every music theme of his is a banger. I like that they gave him character arc in Super, but unlike other villains, where that means redemption, Frieza stays just as evil, instead he matures in personality, learns to put effort into things, keep his emotions under control, plan ahead.

I read the whole manga as a kid but when I tried watching Kai recently I thought basically every episode was twice as long as it needed to be. But then I think that about most anime. So much overwriting.

Yeah he's the rare example of someone who benefited from Super's writing at all besides a number boost

>>27880
Thats why I say "read the manga".

I watched Dragonball and Z as a kid. I never understood any of it. I dunno, that anime just seemed kinda boring with endless long fight fests. Like wrestling. And it's mainly just staring at the opponents and planning end-game punches

Watch DBZ kai
The pacing in that version is a lot better and covers the manga content a lot more consistently since it cuts the filler episodes and a lot of filler scenes.

Anyways, going back to the second half of your post, my grip with the series is how emotionally weak a lot of the characters are at the start compared to how physically strong they are. Characters somehow keep falling for the same sudden increases in their opponent’s power; no one learns to fucking help their friends from being tortured by dudes like nappa, buu, and freiza in the face of overwhelming power which makes characters feel mentally weak and stagnant; also I still think the decision to make characters try to take on villains like cell, freiza, and the androids solo even after it’s proven routinely since as early as the freiza saga on namek that that shit never works is genuinely infuriating.
As a kid, you might not understand DBZ. But as an adult, you really begin to get mentally worn by watching the protagonists and reformed villains keep getting their asses kicked, Goku acting like a kid and not killing off his opponents, gohan and krill if getting trashed every episode, vegeta getting tortured, piccolo never seeing namek fully heal from the atomstpheric collapse and freiza’s invasion, and Yamcha never amounting to anything. It fucking sucks to watch man

Also, images like this makes me so fucking angry with Goku like you wouldn’t believe just off the fact that that’s his dad and he knows what happened and he doesn’t change. This guy barely takes any fight fucking seriously even as late as his encounter with super saiyan broly. He never goes all out at the start and doesn’t have the killer instinct and will of vegeta, he’s so unimaginably sensitive to pain and minor discomfort and you can tell by how frequently he finds himself standing from blows I’ve seen exponentially weaker anime characters in the dragon ball universe and other anime universes casually shrug off. I’m so glad that the guy can be bothered to learn to use his teeth, but fuck man, at least a guy like guts from berserk or Damien Wayne from DC comics learned to go all out and beat the ever loving shit out of villains ruthlessly.
Goku is still mentally a kid fighting his enemies even in his forties.

Super strength doesn't mean invincibility.

>Characters somehow keep falling for the same sudden increases in their opponent’s power; no one learns to fucking help their friends from being tortured by dudes like nappa, buu, and freiza in the face of overwhelming power which makes characters feel mentally weak and stagnant;

Like Sakura Haruno from Naruto?

> also I still think the decision to make characters try to take on villains like cell, freiza, and the androids solo even after it’s proven routinely since as early as the freiza saga on namek that that shit never works is genuinely infuriating.

Idk any of the characters specifically.

I haven't watched Dragon ball or Z since 2003-05.
And I probably don't care to start again.

Physical strength != mental strength. No one in the series has a lot of courage and resilience to pain necessary to deal with villains like cell. Like cmon. Count how many times in that saga you see a saiyan collapse from a knee strike while cell is casually regrowing entire limbs back from energy blasts casually without breaking a sweat, or freiza somehow flying despite being cut in half and only being provided enough ki from Goku just to stay breathing. The protagonists (except tien, Yamaha, not krillin, and piccolo) are exceptionally weak.
>sakura
Sakura was not useless. She stayed out of most fights in the second half of the series and did a lot of recovery work to help injured fighters return and surpass their strength. Plus, she did slot on her end to help in fights directly anyways and is crazy strong herself.
>idk the characters specifically
Watch dbz kai. The pacing of that edited show is much better, you can find the episodes for free on archive.org, and there’s no filler

This.
A lot of people hate on Sakura for being "useless" just because she doesnt have super powered ffense attacks like Sasuke and Naruto.
But I think it's mainly because she simps for Sasuke even though in the pre-Shippuden series, around the second half, Sasuke was getting his ass handed to him.
And yet she patronizes Naruto, a lot of it justified though.

You're forgetting that in most superhero franchises, whether western or Oriental, the most powerful characters often have emotional weaknesses that can be exploited, the most obvious being their loved ones ' well-being.
