Any gothic enjoyers here? What's the most based way to play OG Gothic? I've installed some repack with that Union mod but that shit modifies graphics with stupid stuff like new water and new shadows that are impossible to disable as far as I can tell. I just want OG graphics with 60 fps and 1080p.

Doesnt GOG version run at 1080p 60fps by default?
Gothic is one of those games that for me defined what an RPG should be. Well, Gothic 2, but I also liked the first one.
I love the factions, that you can get to know them, do jobs for them and decide which one to join. I love that you start as a absolute nobody, dressed in rags and armed with a stick, getting your ass handed to you by local vermin, but over the course of the game morph into the hero. I love that despite being high-fantasy setting, magic is still treated as magic, as a mystical force unfamiliar to most. I love the super-tight world design, small open world but every corner filled with contend. I love that enemy design clearly communicates their difficulty level, fancy armor = good fighter, large and filled with fangs and teeth = dangerous beast. I do really hate one thing though, how the leveling system expects you to exterminate all wildlife to earn XP, I dont like that, its very roleplay-unfriendly.

Steam version worked for me as is. Launcher says it's running version 1.08k_mod, if that's helpful. Only put a few hours into it but the one thing I'd change is the spoken language cuz the main characters English voice acting sucks cock

Great game, the 2 also, I love the feeling of going from a nobody getting rekt by anything to a demi god. Reminds me I need to play The Chronicles Of Myrtana

Thats a game I really wanted to like, but couldnt. It almost recaptures magic of the first two games, but here are certain design decisions in it that are too antithetical to Gothic DNA. The scripted sequences are the most obvious one. Then there is tendency to just hand player stuff. For example at the beginning you need a health potion for a quest, you can either buy one from alchemist, at the point of the game when 50g or whatever it costs is signification portion of your wealth, or sneak into a warehouse to steal it. Or stumble upon the one thats thrown on the ground behind alchemists house. For another quest you need boar meat, again, beginning of the game, boars are challenging opponents, but right next to the place where you pick this quest is a shack with alchemists apprentice, that will escort you into the forest outside the town for different quest, where conveniently two boars are hanging out, which he will kill and you get to loot. Another quests demands roasted lamb, there is a shortage in town so the butcher wont sell you any, so your options are either to sneak into his house during night and lockpick the chest, or undetected kill a lamb from village herd, or kill the lost one, which you are supposed to find for another quest, so you have to decide which of these quests you want to finish. And also random traveling merchant in town has exactly one piece of lamb. There is a new weapon type in Chronicles Of Myrtana, crossbows. In the town there is one just laying around in front of smithy, doesnt belong to anyone, you can just take it. And most disappointingly, magic. Replacing learning circles tied to story chapters by finding books and runes in the world sounds great, lets mages progress more organically, gives them incentive to explore to find equipment as any other build would have, from roleplay perspective could be really fun, crawling through mystical places and searching for magical artifacts and knowledge, great, but the ease of access makes it feel meaningless. The first circle training book is carried by two bandits outside the gates of the first town. The first rune I found was in an abandoned shack right next to the road. The magical powers that in previous games you had to earn through lengthy questlines, which made them acquiring them feel meaningful, even though mechanically it was the worst build possible, are here just unceremoniously handed to you.

Gothic 1 > Gothic 2
