These games are just awful. They are in the same category as games like Fortnite or Overwatch in their cancerous influences on the gaming industry. “Soulslike” games are soulless garbage. They are not “hardcore” either. Every single normalfag streamer plays these games. It’s like the same popularity as Call of Duty. You see the cancerous influence of Souls in new Star Wars and Zelda games where your character moves like a slow fatass and you have to deal with this retarded stamina meter. These games fucking suck. We already had difficult sword fighting games like Ninja Gaiden and Shinobi but these faggots act like Souls is some innovative masterpiece when it’s a steaming pile of garbage. What about the artsyle of these games? It’s boring as hell. This loner knight shit is really getting old now. All these games look exactly the same. I’m so sick of this shit.

You're right that the combat of he souls games is nothing remarkable by itself. The appeal of the first of those games (Demon Souls, Dark Souls) was someting different, vid related. I can understand not liking the trend they've spawned.

tbh yea, shields are viable though. the bogstandard souls gameplay has got stale fs, i think elden ring is heavily overrated for basically just being big souls

i feel like if youre this big a hater theres nothing anyone could do to convince you these games have merit, thats fine. they have faults

but like i said in my op, bloodborne and sekiro transcend any of those faults, i would check those out even if you hate souls. they are fundamentally souls games, but they change up the mechanics and themes enough to stand on their own. fromsoft has recycled the themes of demons/dark souls way too much i agree but you gotta check bb/sek

Its boring as hell now, it was genuinely novel back when the older titles came out. Also the understated storytelling through exploration is something I am a big fan of, much more natural and appropriate for video game as a medium compared to standard locking player into a cutscene in between gameplay segments, But yeah, the gameplay itself is very simplistic and unexciting.

Demons Souls and Dark Souls 1 are great games. Sekiro is also different enough to be exciting.

The problem with Soulsborne type games is they are lazy as fuck now. They devs know that the players will obsess over shit if you make it vague and piecemeal enough, so they just put random indecipherable nonsense in there. They don't bother balancing or tuning anything, because there's so many options something will be broken anyway. Instead you mostly have a learning curve to figure out what builds are most broken. You have to really go out of your way to have a "fun" experience, probably doing outside research to figure out how to come up with a build that you will like. And worst of all, there's no actual skill or difficulty involved in dealing with the opponents - it's literally just trial and error until you memorize the attack pattern. It's "I Wanna Be The Guy" school of video game difficulty, and the devs have embraced that meme by intentionally putting bait all over the place to that effect.

That is basically what any more or less decent melee combat system has, besides the fact that enemies also have certain weaknesses that you should find and exploit.

DS1 blew up because it was a moderately difficult game with good art direction and a level design in an era where those traits were in the gutter for a lot of games. Other games take notice of this and copy various aspects of its design leading us to an era where the style of action game a person's most likely to be familiar with is Souls, so that leads to a situation where devs will just default to making their game play like it because it has immediate appeal among the wider audience. Of course, people get bored of the same so Souls itself and other games move from being slower more methodical enemy encounters to trying to be like action games of yore with a faster pace and attack sequences while fundamentally still being a game where combat is designed in such a way two uyghas on the edge of a bridge shooting arrows at you is an actual challenge. And that's where I'd say the key to Souls and its clones being so successful is that to the layman it's far easier to "see" what high skill gameplay looks and feels like compared to devil may cry or ninja gaiden. Watching a guy dodge a sequence of attacks or parry a move is easy to understand the difficulty of along with being a spectacle in and of itself. Meanwhile in older action games, seeing a good dmc player combo every enemy before they can attack once gives people the impression the games are just flashy button mashers. The skill required to pull that off is less obvious and will only be understood by those that already played through the games a million times.

It's the same situation a lot of modern fps find themselves in. People are sick of hiding behind cover and limited movement so now every game emphasizes some movement option like "sprint into a slide into a jump, repeat, maybe some wall running if it's feeling risky." They want the games to have the movement of an arena shooter while being held under the constraints of cod/other shooter's design. Meanwhile when they look at actual arena shooters it's just uyghas moving at the speed of light to spawn camp the good weapons/powerups to them.

The only games that I've played that I've seen described as souls-like were Hollow Knight, Zenless Zone Zero and Atlyss. I don't think being able to dodge, parry, and having an attack with a wind-up that risks being hit for a payoff constitutes a genre. That's just a reasonable set of features a game with melee combat would have.
Having jumping, pickups and wavedashing in your game doesn't make it a mariolike.

No, they're different subgenres. Spectacle fighters take greater inspiration from fighting games while Souls-likes are closer to old hack-and-slash games like Golden Axe so the first category has more emphasis on "labbing" your combos to have greater damage and style points while the second is more about the hit-and-run tactic, being easy to learn, hard to master.
