Have you managed to free yourself of your nostalgia biases? Let's perform a test. Think of some games in series or franchises that you you experienced first as a kid before trying out earlier entries. Are you capable of recognizing any of the earlier entries as superior games?

Why are older games necessarily superior? The sequels can polish the rough edges of the original.

Let's see… SADX is a trash port and most of Sonic Heroes is rehashed levels with slippery controls, while S3&K is the GOAT. BUT SA1 is still up there with the GOAT for me. Not superior, just a solid 8 or a 7.

S3&K best game, basically improved everything from the previous games. The sprites are more detailed, the backgrounds are more detailed, the levels are more detailed, the music is more detailed, you don't have to grind for the emeralds and there are three playable characters. The only major problem is the special stages, which can be dizzying.

Yeah I began with Fallout 3 and I recognize Fallout 1 and 2 which I played maybe a decade later are better with the first one being the best. And I have a lot of nostalgia for Fallout 3 and Oblivion.

This is an interesting choice, why the first one, since second to me seems like an expanded and polished version of Fallou 1?

Battlefield peaked with BC2
3 was fun but it started the nonsense of having a million different guns and being able to parachute all over the place

Pretty sure I played Final Fantasy Tactics Advance before Final Fantasy Tactics on PSX. I think the playstation version is undoubtedly better overall. The hardware was much better. GBA is basically a portable SNES so it couldn't do the fancy 3D that Final Fantasy Tactics could do so the maps were all built to work from a fixed camera angle, sloping upwards from the viewer, where no walkable area is occluded. Compare that the original that could have a 3D building that you can traverse completely around because you can spin the map. That said they did a great job with the art and gameplay with that limitation.

Absolutely not. Star Wars Battlefront II from 2005 is still my favourite game of all time.

Fallout 1 was already mentioned and I'd add Morrowind but otherwise idk. I've heard good things about Red Dead Revolver.
I guess I'm old but I can't think of many examples of games that I played out of order so the real test would be seeing if there are any newer games that I preferred over the originals and there are plenty: Super Marios Bros 3, Wii Mario>N64 Mario, Halo 3, KOTOR2, The Sims 2, and GTA 4 all come to mind.

It's been too long to say anything definitive about them, I just seem to recall liking the first one more. I suspect it was due to the maps.

I still play it on the reg with the Saga mod installed. It keeps the core game but adds a bunch of content (maps, weapons, classes, vehicles, etc), makes everything more lore-accurate, and adds stuff from the later cartoons and movies.

Fallout 2 is more immature and edgy, relies more on references than Fallout 1, perfect if you're a teenager but in the end I feel it's the inferior work of art because of that, despite having more stuff. Also the Master and its army are better antagonists than the enclave.

Skyrim is shit without mods

Didn't realise GBA could have graphics that good

Bf2 was great, just raking up bots and seeing how long you can last is chill.

The only thing I'm really nostalgic for is how in the 90s tech progress created a situation where games were actually improving in a lot of ways, with the rapid increases in memory, storage, and processing meaning sequels actually improved on old systems and added new ones. Not to look back with too rosy of a tint in my glasses but the low cost of tech and development and the lack of corporate domination really did let video gaming flourish.
