Fat people… exist. Fat people are real. They are not made-up. And if you want to make a fat guy in a video game you should be allowed to. It's a video game, nobody's to tell you how to play it. It's ultimately a matter of good character design, and I think Dr. Eggman, Globox and Spectacular Spider-Man's Dr. Octopus look awesome.

I prefer characters to be good looking, but being fat doesn't inherently make a character unattractive. If I were tasteless enough to play Overwatch I would play that Mei lady because she's really pretty.

Marvel Rivals was a surprise success even though its pretty much just a Overwatch knockoff, partially because of a free-to-play models, but also because its heroes are appealing and have a built-in fanbase because they're Marvel characters.
And the continued popularity of Overwatch rests ENTIRELY on the appeal of its characters. With how badly mismanaged Overwatch has been as a game (up to and including the fact that Blizzard apparently can't cobble a singleplayer campaign together after a full fucking decade), it is probably no exaggeration to say that fanfic shit and pornography is what's keeping Overwatch relevant.
The main focal point of the hero shooter IS its heroes, and you can't build the foundation of your hero shooter on heroes that all look plain-faced and drab with the only thing interesting or eye-catching about them being their increasingly ridiculous clown costumes they're made to wear. If you're creating a hero shooter in its own brand-new universe, it becomes ESPECIALLY important to make appealing characters. If they're not attractive, they should at least be cool.
It IS actually kind of a strange trend among Western developers that they're making games centered around mostly drab, plain-faced characters when decades of marketing experience would show that the opposite of this is what you want. "Sex sells" and the more eye catching something is, the better.

Also, coomerbait is not necessarily good character design. If your female character has an open cleavage, huge tits and barely any clothing that doesn't automatically make her a good design. Look at It-Z's alternative designs I posted. Sure, they're hot. But they are also cute. Sex appeal for the sake of sex appeal however just looks stupid, everyone just ends up looking like a bimbo and the game turns into a porn parody without the porn. Even Dead or Alive's character designs have more to them than just "HOOJ BOOBAS," every character looks charming, memorable and unique. Same for Senran Kagura.

That said, I feel like characters have to be somewhat attractive to feel heroic. Sort of like how they updated Gale's appearance in BG3. I don't know if Gale has ever been coombait, but making him a bit more handsome makes him look more like a hero.

What is particularly shit about modern design is the simple blandness of it. They're drab and plain-faced and, maybe worst of all, typically wearing clothes that the marketing department, human resources and some consultancy group all agreed was "acceptably rebellious."
