Bonus point if it's games that aren't horror themed, or-if not SPECIALLY games that were/started as horror games but ended up taking a more action approach and how does that evolved?
out of the tip of my tongue Devil May Cry which was supposed to be a Resident Evil game with a particular horror focus; ended up being known for being the SSStylish action game and i mean maybe it was because i played it as a 5 year old but back then i was scared shitless of traversing through the game
there's a lot of Resident Evil remains that are even scarier
makes me wish they had kept a lot of them and commited just slightly more to the horror bit, even in future games where they perfected the action formula
then there's the psychological horror which i think in turn you can get something like affective horror which is present across nearly every Devil May Cry game, the generational trauma in Vergil, Dante's constant joking becomes a coping mechanism
then there's Half-Life 2 which i mean it's a very special case when the 2nd entry was even scarier than the 1st one even though the 1st one is more set up as a horror game?
impressively enough a lot of this is done through the eerie ambience, when you're alone personally while Ravenholm and Nova Prospekt are kinda spooky, my defacto to Half-Life 2 scaries is usually Canals, when you're all alone with a boat in the evening and the sun is starting to set, you can find remains of hideouts and remains of people's lives, and yeah the game is full of these places, where you're hoping to find someone and there's just you and random props
Now then there's Majora's Mask which is a particularly interesting game, the game is cheery most of the time, but it's also eerie and creepy at others, even after playing it before there's times where you can feel uneasy despite knowing what's next, there's obviously the countdown and the feeling of unpending doom, the pressure, but also something about the ambient that feels so cozy yet so creepy at times. like feeling comfortable but knowing there's something lurking around, even if it's just the time.
…
Asking because i was making a game based on Fear & Hunger but just like Devil May Cry we ended up focusing more in the action department but i still really wanna bank on the horror theme even if it's not the focus anymore.
might post pics on another thread later, the game is very barebones right now but we're almost done the 1st roadmap of development and we might start working on the 1st level and the models soon-er
i'm just waiting for a book my bf bought for me that has old workflows for 3D modelling used in PS2 games which is the look we're kinda going for but not just in looks, but also performance-wise and quality.
