what games do you find overrated??????????????!?!?!?!?!
i played a few hours of Mario Odyssey for the first time, and I'm soooo bored. Everything feels so empty and devoid of enemies. and it's so easy, and the moons are so unsatisfying to collect due to being everywhere
>>43722 i insist upon your bussy stfu Disco is a
phenomenal game
>>43727 i agree that it's a vit overrated, but I wouldn't say it's boring, das crazy. it's got cool shit to discover on every corner. I think the game just isn't ur vibe
>>43729 Sekiro
>>43720Skyrim IV, Skyrim V and all other variants
What a garbage series

but people are slowly reaching the consensus that Elder Scrolls games are very sloppy. but they're fun slop anyway, and there aren't many games like them, because of how ambitious they are. so it's a guilty pleasure for me

Zelda Breath of the Wild, Elden Ring, Animal Well, Doom Eternal, Stray, Dave the Diver, Expedition 33, Control, Alan Wake, Slay the Princess, Hades, Risk of Rain, Dead Cells.
>>43758Srry forgot Baldurs Gate 3, Terraria, NEVA, Jusant, Golden Eye 64.
Most underrated game ever: Demolish or Die
>>43720Mario Odyssey almost feels like it's just trying to be a resume filler. It looks flashy but there's extremely little substance. For all the effort put into Mario's move set the levels are too bland to remotely make use of it. And yeah the moons are everywhere but also some of them are locked behind actual challenges but there seems to be no correlation between how much you have to do to get a moon and the value of the moon itself, even though you can get some that are 3 at a time.
>>43723More the lore and storytelling for me is overrated. The games themselves are just vagueposting and providing random bullshit for the fans to fantheory into some kind of coherent canon. If they were open about that it'd be fine but the fans are basically being scammed in that there's basically no actual story behind the games. Some other big series have the same shit too, like Zelda.
>>43741Overrated in the sense that it's way more popular than it should be but it's still pretty good.
>>43727Tears of the Kingdom is 10x worse but they are both massively overrated and seem to indicate that a lot of players don't care about the gameplay as long as there's a big open world to wander around in (even if there is nothing to do there)
>>43745Half Life 1 sucked too and ushered in the trend of corridor shooters with its extremely linear levels.

>>43741Emotional Manipulation the videogame, same with Spec ops: the line.
Also Nier Automata and all of Yoko Taro's games in general for being pseudo-intellectual crap for video soyessayists.
Every time i see a half life fag simp for half life combat, I look at them and think, motherfucker have you played F.e.a.r
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IwORgX6Bs8look at this and compare it to half life 2 combat. Half life 2 gunplay is shit compared to this
Pokémon HGSS and DPP are stinkers that people love due to nostalgia. Pokémon games went to shit after Emerald, BW/BW2 were the only exceptions.
The Binding of Isaac. Fuck this game.
Minecraft is not a very good game. Bad survival mechanics, bad combat, bad rpg mechanics, lacking physics to play with, limited building options if you don't branch out to redstone. It's no different from open world Ubisoft slop in that sense.
Stardew Valley is a fucking dogshit game. You either play it "to win" by optimizing your time which means you'll play it with a wiki open on your second monitor, or you'll play it like a brainless idle game (and get punished for it).
Don't Starve is the opposite of fun. Another wiki game that people love for some reason.
All Mortal Kombat games are terrible, even the old ones. Blows my mind how this shit was ever culturally relevant.
All Final Fantasy games but 5, 6, 12, and 14.
All Zelda games but the first one and A Link to the Past.
Terraria is a decent game that is glazed too much. I can say this because I have more than 1000 hours in vanilla. People treat it like a gift from God when the game is very flawed. It's fun though.
Now the scalding hot take: I don't think Super Metroid is that good. It's impressive for the time but the gameplay is kinda meh. Not a bad game, I just think it's overhyped.
>>43833>Witcher 3 at least has fun characters, good writingWitcher 3 had some fun characters and some good writing sprinkled over a 100 hour game where most of the time will be spend engaging with forgettable characters and boring predictable writing.
>Also very atmospheric locationsReally, which ones? Admittedly I never got through the first map, but even in previous titles which I actually did like I wouldnt describe
locations as atmospheric. Its all generic medieval fantasy on that page.
>As far as gameplay goes, it's not amazing, but it's a solid game. That is actually unacceptable opinion. Gameplay is garbage. Extremely restricted buildcrafting, combat that fails to evolve entire length of the game, bizarre enemy and item leveling system which completely removes any sense of progression, majority of gameplay contend being ubisoft-style collectibles and occasional Elder Scrolls style dungeon crawling , both of which do not fit in Witcher world and Gerald's character.
>>43832What Half Life 2 has is setpieces. In Fear you crawl through grey corridors and office buildings, thats it. Gets boring fast.
>>43847>Half Life 2 has is setpiecesIm convinced thats the main reason why half life 2 became overrated. A lot of its competitors during its time used grey corridors, grey office buildings and etc for its map design (fear, quake, doom, etc etc)
Half life 2 map design was admittedly very varied compared to its competitors. Very varied to the point that it hid all of half life 2's weak elements (weapons, overall gun play and etc)
>>43856My main problem with Hollow Knight is how I didn't feel rewarded by exploration. Like you mentioned, most of the setpieces are samey and not very imaginative imo. Going through Metroid and Castlevania areas is always wild with the crazy good BGM and visuals. Hollow Knight is a good-looking game aesthetically speaking but they had the areas too samey, I guess for artistic cohesion, but it fell flat for me.
Not only that but the fact that it's a game of saving up currency to buy upgrades at shops makes it so the reward is always some coins, and that's not what I'm trying to see. There's no excitement if I know most of what I'm gonna find for exploring is currency for buying shit when I backtrack to a shop.
I enjoyed the platforming and combat but at that point I'd rather play a linear game like Shovel Knight, and then it feels like Hollow Knight is an exploration game with no reason for being designed that way.
This is pretty controversial I think as all my friends hail this game as the second coming of Jesus.
I haven't played Shenmue a lot, but after hearing about how revolutionary it was and how many people loved it, I was expecting a lot more. It turns out the city is small and ugly, the characters have very repetitive dialogue, and it's not very immersive. Maybe I got filtered, but I was disappointed. Hearing "Do you know where there are Chinese people in town?" over and over again is boring.
I think the Boku no Natsuyasumi series did a much better job at making a game about mundane daily life than Shenmue, even if it's less technically impressive due to its old-school Resident Evil-like setup with fixed camera angles, but it works better and the art direction is infinitely more kino.
I would also mention Mother 3 as a slightly overrated game, even if it's an absolutely great game with a good story concluding the Mother series, everyone who likes JRPGs should play it.
The only thing that bothers me a bit is that people tend to rate it higher than Earthbound, while I think Mother 3 tends to be a more conservative game than Earthbound regarding the themes of its story and its gameplay mechanisms. Earthbound is flawed in several ways but there are no JRPGs as bold and crazy and original like it. To borrow the terms of Deleuze & Guattari, Earthbound was deterritorialization while Mother 3 was reterritorialization.
>>43840System Shock 2, Dark Souls, Celeste, Civilization, Age of Empires, on the top of my head
>>43843Mario 64 might seem boring in 2025 (and I even disagree with that), but it was absolutely revolutionary in the later 1990s. No other console games controlled like this before, it had set a new standard for 3D video game controls. Also the cool thing about both World and 64 is that you have a lot of stuff to unlock after finishing the game, I think even my mom ended getting all the 120 stars when I was a kid.
>>43871I probably made the mistake of playing Shenmue after finishing Yakuza 0 indeed.
However, while the Yakuza series takes insipiration from Shenmue, they are still pretty different games. You can't talk to random people in Yakuza, except for side quests, while you can talk to everyone in Shenmue. The day-night cycle in Yakuza is triggered by story events, while time always advances in Shenmue. Yakuza is a pretty goofy game reminiscent of shonen manga/anime, while Shenmue is more similar to a movie drama.
That's why I compared Shenmue to Boku no Natsuyasumi: you can talk to everyone, and time advances as you go to a different screen, at night you go back home, and it's basically like a coming-of-age movie.
That said, Tokyo and Osaka are modeled very faithfully in Yakuza 0, pic related is the parking lot where you learn Rush moves IRL.
>>43870 >>43872The anon asked if they were some acclaimed games that we haven't called overrated in this thread. I've mentioned some. That doesn't mean I think they are overrated. I had a blast playing both System Shock 2 and Celeste in the past, they deserve their acclaim.
Btw, I personally liked the depiction of anxiety in Celeste. It's not deep, I think it's mostly aimed at kids or teenagers, but as someone who used to have panic attacks and have a problem with alcohol due to anxiety, I believe the scenes where the protagonist has panic attacks can make kids understand why some people can feel stressed out even in situations where there is nothing threatening.
Of course, if you want something more in-depth, there are other media for this, Celeste is first and foremost a platformer with a few story elements tackling "woke" subjects sprinkled on top, and I think it's fine.
>>43878I knew it was a bit janky but I thought it was mostly because of the English voice acting and that if I would play it with the original Japanese voices it would be okay, but it turns out even then the game is janky.
I think the dialogue system made it that way, since so many people have so different lines, and you always ask them questions about a specific goal, I think it's understandable that it is this way.
Maybe I should bite the bullet, play it with the English dub and embrace the jank.
