they're like the worst employees you could ever imagine, worse than any apathetic stoned teenager because at least the teenager doesn't have delusions of seniority or experience or a complete inability to accept criticism or admit to making a mistake, at least they can be trained. but the boomers and karens are unreformable, they complain and exude indignation and misery out of every orifice and destroy employee morale, they do things the wrong way and they get belligerent and defensive when you try to show them how to do them the right way, they get irritated with busy shifts and lines and impatient customers and they show their irritation very publicly, they gossip about co-workers and discuss politics and religion and create drama, they speak condescendingly to co-workers and customers and even managers, it's unbelievable. it's like a paroled convict who was in prison for decades and has no idea how to re-enter normal society. and when you are forced to finally reprimand them, they have a fucking emotional breakdown.
i was dealing with a recent hire who was like this, and one day i noticed that she was burning through rolls of paper towels at several times the rate of any other worker wadding up huge balls of paper towels and wiping stuff down and throwing it away and grabbing another, so i kind of pulled her aside so as not to embarrass her and explained to her how to take one paper towel and fold it twice to make four surfaces and use one surface until it gets dirty, then use another, etc. she became indignant and said "sweetie, i've been cleaning up after four kids for 20 years i know how to use a paper towel." i told her, "first of all, i'm trying to help you, i'm trying to show you how to do the job right, i'm trying to make your job easier. second, this is work, this isn't your house, and you are a brand new employee here. don't talk to me or anyone else here that way. don't call me 'sweetie' and don't get an attitude with me. you do it again, you're gone. do you understand?" she started crying. she cried about it for the rest of the day and then the next day she never showed up for work, no call no show. someone had to come in and pull a double to cover for her. and i didn't even get a chance to confront her about all the other shit she was doing wrong.
i felt guilty about it, which makes me even more annoyed when i really think about it because i shouldn't feel guilty just for expecting a perfectly healthy able-bodied adult to listen and follow basic directions and not behave like an entitled spoiled brat at work. i understand that your hero donald trump betrayed you and destroyed the economy and your security and i understand how humiliating it must feel to be a suburban middle-class retiree for years and then suddenly be reduced to the lowly task of wiping down tables and ringing up customers, but you know what? too bad.
your making me feel bad for the lady it must suck to be a boomer and have to go back into work against your will and then get talken aside by your employer about not being able to use toilet paper. I would be angry and bitter and not listen either

semi-related, but at the first job i ever had i worked at a car wash staffed mostly by illegal immigrants and one day the boss told me to go clean the employee restroom, and he also added "be careful, cause these fuckin mexicans'll wipe their ass and throw the shitty toilet paper in the trash can" and i just figured he was making some kind of racist joke but then i went in there and there was a trash can full of shitty toilet paper. i knew there weren't any gloves or anything in the supply closet so i just bit the bullet and pulled the trashbag off the lip of the can and without thinking i pulled the drawstrings and a big gust of shit air wooshed out and hit me right in the face and i almost puked. i disposed of the bag and washed my hands thoroughly but it was already too late, the next day i was working and suddenly i just got really sick out of nowhere, like when the diarrhea just hits you with no warning and you have to slam your asshole shut as hard you can and you know you are seconds away from shitting your pants. i had to try to casually but quickly stiff-leg to the employee restroom and the fucking door was locked so i had to go into the lobby and use the customer restroom and i just barely made it in time and had this bout of explosive diarrhea just spraying out like a firehose by the gallon, like the biggest most violent shit i had ever taken in my life. i had to use so much toilet paper just to clean myself and then i flushed the toilet and it fucking backed up and diarrhea started overflowing all over the floor and i just panicked and got the hell out of there and didn't even wash my hands, not like it mattered at this point anyway. nobody saw me go in there but soon enough someone found the damage and one of the mexicans was ordered to go clean it up and it was all they were talking about in spanish for the rest of the day. i ended up being ill for days and had to call in sick and go to a doctor and get tested for swine flu because it was right in the middle of the 2009 epidemic, but it was just some kind of bacterial infection apparently. it was actually a good thing the employee restroom was locked because they all assumed it must have been a customer who did it, for the rest of the time i worked there they would still bring it up now and again and it became like this legendary story where there was so much diarrhea that it covered the whole bathroom floor and started seeping under the door into the hallway. they never knew it was me. but it was really their fault and kind of an unintentional revenge on my part for them getting me sick with their shitty toilet paper.
