>>312OP here. I agree mostly with what you have to say. I'm of the opinion public school under capitalism is mostly a waste of time with just enough good content for it not to get abolished on pedagogical grounds. In reality it's main function is a means of keeping children off the street where they might commit crimes or be political. Instead putting them in a convenient holding pen where the parents children can drop their kids to be wage slaves.
It does seem that all classes are skippable through a test as you wish. Your brother took AP bio when he wanted to. My countries system would allow the same. You, i gather from context grew up in a family who could speak the academic dialect. Maybe they were white collar workers or had degrees or just spent enough time interested in the world in their own study.
Many of my students don't have that.
I saw some study somewhere saying that poor kids hear 30 million less words by the time they are in primary school than rich kids ( i've just done some cursory googling, im pretty tired but this article seems to suggest that while 30 million might not have been true, a word gap does exist and does have effects
https://www.shanahanonliteracy.com/blog/is-there-really-a-30-million-word-gap)
The kids that i see in my classes that are capable of independent study have families that read to them every night. They have parents that tell them about the constellations because they read those stories as a kid. They are the parents that answer their kids questions on why is the sky blue with answers they learned in University (or you know, senior high school)
I would imagine your family had that. Some of my kids come from families where not only has no one gone to Uni, they haven't finished high school. Those kids are totally capable of being great learners, i've seen it. But they wont get it without the school.
As for schooling being the slowest way to disseminate info, it certainly can be. If you've got a teacher that subscribes to the banking model of teaching, yeah dude, its less than useless. Its actively harmful.
But there isn't just standing up front and lecturing anymore, education has innovated since then even if perhaps the university has not. Its a bit of a strawman to imply thats all that my profession is capable of doing.
Just before i finish i'll say that i totally agree with
>>309 that we need more technical skills. Every high schooler should come out with a trade in addition to all the other typical classes. Its fucking nonsense that kids leave school either with skills to get them a degree or skills that allow them to produce high skilled labour but never both.
I know everyone has an opinion on education. We all, hopefully, had to go through it to some degree. So we have skin in the game to various degrees.
But i think what is indisputable is that teaching and learning are some of the most fundamental skills to our lives as humans. You may disagree with the public school but you'll still need an answer to what we should do about education. Hopefully that answer has some good sources that you find interesting. Maybe some suggestions or teaching theories that'd go down well.
Would love to hear what you all come up with.
