I am from the United Stated and I took a Spanish class for 5 YEARS in the entirety of my elementary school years and learned nothing… That's not entirely true but we learned more about how to make papel picados than how to speak Spanish, The only thing I learned how to say in all of those 5 years is "Me gusta las frutas." And it was only because of this song they made us watch in 5th grade that has been stuck in my head for the rest of my life: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWn2fkJTdCs I did have the same teacher for all 5 of those years and she was pretty cool, She was from Spain, specifically Catalonia, but she moved to Portugal, then Mexico, then the United States so she could speak 4 languages which is more then I would ever be able to speak. The best thing though was that every year we would sell Bracelets to other kids in the school and out parents would gives us money to buy them, and all of the money would go to buying some poor family in the Andes a Llama, so that was pretty cool. I don't think is was bad that we spent so much time learning about Latin American and Iberian culture but I just wish we were taught the fucking language more because we only were taught Colors, Days, Numbers, and Body parts, most of which I forget. But the dumbest part though was the "Spanish name" thing where kids would adopt a new name, I have no Spanish heritage but I have a Latin derived name so my teacher just added an "-ino" at the end of it, I was a kid and I was stupid so I assumed that if I ever traveled to a Spanish speaking country I would have to use this name. I shared this story because I thought it was funny, but one question I have for you /latam/ is if English classes exist in your countries in vice versa?

Cool story Joshino. Yeah we have English classes in school, but in general it is even shittier here than what you described. There are some bilingual schools for wealthier kids but for the majority of us you're expected to attend a 50 minute class by an uninterested teacher once a week. Some people try private classes but they're so-so too. I guess most of the anons here have learned English on the internet, through chans and gaming. Do you still have interest in learning other languages?

>Cool story Joshino.
Thanks but my name is not Joshing, try again :)
>There are some bilingual schools for wealthier kids but for the majority of us you're expected to attend a 50 minute class by an uninterested teacher once a week.
Once a week?!?! I assume that this was just my school district but we had to attend Spanish class every day. And also this may haven just been my school but my teacher was anything but disinterested, she would start off every day with a chant that went like "Hola, hola, Coca cola. ¿Qué te pasa,
calabaza? - Nada, nada, limonada." or whenever she gave us a worksheet (This was elementary school so it was never anything more than a coloring page of a sombrero or something) she would sing "Put Your Name At The Top En Espanol" in the melody of If "Your Happy And You Know It." And whenever it was a kids birthday she would but a Sombrero on them and the class would sing "Happy birthday to you" but in Spanish. Clearly I'm just Nostalgically reminiscing here since I was very young.
>Do you still have interest in learning other languages?
Yeah but I'm way too lazy.

No soy Joshino pero I still have a desire to properly learn spanish. It sucks being a pocho that can only kind of understand a conversation and can hardly speak.

Yeah obviously english classes exist in latinamerica, do you think I spontaneously learned english? english is very emphasized in private schooling and i even dare say fluency in english is a class differentiator. games, internet boards and youtube certainly help, but getting english lessons from a very early age and throughout the entirety of elementary school makes a world of difference.

>"Hola, hola, Coca cola. ¿Qué te pasa, calabaza? - Nada, nada, limonada."
lmfao that's insanely funny, i guess english lessons are kinda like that too, like they really insisted "You can say that again" was a frequent idiom to express agreement, I've never heard anyone ever say that

I learned zero english at school lmao. I learned english at 12 talking to muricans in MMORPgs instead.
It was crazy getting perfect scores in every test by just knowing the language while the nerdy kids that actually studied and usually score-mogged me at everything else did worse than me.

My english teacher used to let me fuck around with my phone during class because she knew i already knew all the material that would be covered, I kinda regret not learning more from her because I found out literally two years before the school year ended that she was also fluent in portuguese and i think german and maybe some other languages and had studied languages and was somewhat of a linguistic nerd

>two years
two days lmfao

Eh people say it sometimes but probably not as much as your class made you think.
