Is this country too far gone? It seems that the DR is utterly lolbert brained and stooges of the US, there is very little if not any strong labor movement which was destroyed during the Trujillo years.

It's an odd situation, you have to understand the Caribbean as an imperial frontier full of contradictions, the DR finds itself victim of being under huge US pressure while being a sovereign state and quite isolated. The dominican people's consciousness is a reflection of that, unless that changes we can only make assumptions

the Caribbean is a weak link and has simultaneously insane revolutionary potential (Cuba, Vzla) but also a lot of false consciousness. It has one of the largest diasporas per capita in the world which we know it's a way for capitalism to ship the potential disturbances out and economically is a testing field

I do think the DR could have a pivotal role in the future of the region but to what extent we can't tell

Pretty much, it's the consecuences of being a de facto colony. Even our lefty elements are heavily affiliated/influenced by the democrats.

What's up with that nightclub collapse anything meaningful worth talking about?

As of now over 200 people have been confirmed dead, and likely the number will jump pretty high since the place was packed with like 1000 people. The party was attended by pretty high profile families in both the government and private sector.
The most noteworthy victims are:
-Rubby Perez, a famous and beloved singer, who was performing
-Octavio Dotel, former baseball player
-The son of our public works minister and his wife, who was a member of the Grullon family, who own the biggest private banking conglomerate in the country
-Governor Nelsy Cruz, sister of former MLB player Nelson Cruz

People who attended previously have said that the roof was clearly not well maintained and have reported that sometimes they saw tiles falling from it. Also the place had suffereda fire a few years back that might have also contributed to the collapse of the roof. The whole thing has again sparked a debate about enforcing building codes and performing inspections on existing structures.

Everybody is dogpiling on the owner of the place for failing to properly maintain the building(although he also has some people defending him for some reason) and have launched a lawsuit against him.

IMO he will pay some sort of compensation to the families of the victims, but doubt that anything meaningful will happen, maybe a law or two and a few months or years of revisions and then everything will be the same as before.
