Yes it's true. My sister was part of a Brazilian internet forum for fans of mexican soap operas. One of her friends there was shocked when she actually went to Mexico and it was all brown people, she thought it would be like a European country.

Mexican telenovelas are so white is funny. They remember me of old globo novelas where even when the plot happened in Bahia or RJ you'd only see branquelos, but recently they have been casting some blacks and pardos. Even in Chavo you can see more diversity than in other mexican shows.

what I've noticed more often than that in Brasil, is a certain pardo proud form rightists, if that makes any sense. I believe that was the ideia with the Integralist movement, our og fascists, back in the 1930's. Nowadays it might be a response to the oficial census racial division, that bundles blacks and mixed race (pardo) in the same group. This division was pushed by the black movement in Brasil, their point being that people saying they are mixed, are just ashamed of being black. That might be true to some extent, but the consequence is the erasure of our undeniable mixed origin.
Racism in Brasil is a bit more complicated than that.

I get the reference but I do not think it is the same. Not even close. of course a all-white telenovela that takes place in Salvador is ridiculous but that is not the norm. For Mexico, pretty much everything on TV is what in Brazil would be all-white telenovelas in Bahia. Most telenovelas in Brazil take place, or involve, characters from Rio and sometimes São Paulo. It is far less disparing than what they do in Mexico.

Não tem nada a ver com movimento negro. A razão por que pardos e pretos são agrupados na mesma categoria no censo do IBGE é porque eles têm indicadores socioeconômicos semelhantes, então é estatisticamente conveniente.
