More importantly it was backed by solid reasoning and analysis and not just the accusation that he deviated from the holy scripture of Marx. If anything if you read Marx's writing about imperialism then Kautsky's position was probably closer to it. Lenin's whole point was that the advent of the monopoly phase of capitalism changed things.
