Kerala to become first Indian state to eliminate extreme poverty this weekend
The survey identified just over 100,000 people as living in extreme poverty amid Kerala’s population of 36 million, before implementing a poverty elimination campaign involving community mobilisation, the despatch of hundreds of volunteers to poor areas (as practised in China’s absolute poverty elimination programme), and provision of ration cards and health insurance to thousands of families. Direct food distribution was also rolled out, distributed through the all-women Kudumbashree network, a Kerala-founded programme focused on poverty elimination and women’s empowerment that has spread to other states.

Groups decry surveillance of KMU office in Southern Mindanao
Several groups denounced the suspected surveillance of the office of Kilusang Mayo Uno – Southern Mindanao Region (KMU-SMR). KMU-SMR released an alert that two unidentified individuals on a motorcycle were captured by its CCTV around 11:30 a.m. on October 23. The back rider was apparently taking pictures or footage of its office. This was the second time it documented incidents of alleged surveillance in just a month.

Trump gives South Korea permission to build nuclear-powered submarine
On Wednesday, Seoul’s presidential aide said the two countries had reached a broad deal covering investment and shipbuilding, while Trump said the agreement was “pretty much” finalised. “I have given them approval to build a Nuclear Powered Submarine, rather than the old fashioned, and far less nimble, diesel powered Submarines that they have now,” Trump said on Truth Social Thursday.

Largest police massacre in history: death toll rises to 132 in Rio de Janeiro operation
Considered disastrous by specialists, the actions of the police under the command of Governor Cláudio Castro (PL) surpassed in lethality previous tragedies that until then were considered the bloodiest in Rio, such as Operation Jacarezinho in 2021, with 28 deaths, and Operation Vila Cruzeiro in 2022, which left 24 victims.

Suspect in Miguel Uribe assassination also involved in Luis Carlos Galan conspiracy
One of the main suspects in the assassination of far-right Senator Miguel Uribe spent time in prison for his role in the cover-up of the 1989 assassination of liberal presidential candidate Luis Carlos Galan. The suspect, Simeon Perez, was arrested on Tuesday in Puerto Lleras, a municipality some 160 kilometers (99 miles) southeast of the capital Bogota, where Uribe was fatally shot on June 7.

Lebanon’s Aoun says army to confront Israeli forces after deadly incursion
The Lebanese forces, unlike the armed group Hezbollah, have generally stayed on the sidelines of the conflict with Israel. But Aoun, a former commander of the Lebanese army, appears to have finally lost his patience with the Israeli-forced status quo. Aoun ordered the army to “confront any Israeli incursion into liberated southern territory, in defence of Lebanese territory and the safety of citizens”, during a meeting with Brigadier General Rodolphe Haykal, according to a statement from the presidency.

Almost 1,000 new barriers, gates and walls built by Israel across occupied West Bank to corral Palestinians in their homeland
The mushrooming barriers and metal gates criss-cross Palestine’s roads and towns, denying Palestinians freedom of movement in their own country. Some have occupying Israeli troops positioned at them, and many open and close erratically, disrupting Palestinians’ ability to go to work or school, visit relatives or access medical care. The commission counted 916 new gates, barriers and walls erected in the West Bank since October 7 2023, when a deadly Hamas raid on Israel triggered the genocidal invasion of Gaza.

Italy's Salvini vows to build Sicily bridge, avert clash with audit court
Italy's Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini on Thursday vowed to press ahead with a bridge linking Sicily to the mainland but said he would answer Court of Auditors' objections that have blocked the project, aiming to avoid an institutional clash. Salvini spoke after a meeting called by conservative Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to discuss the court's refusal to sanction the project, which is earmarked to cost the state some 13.5 billion euros ($15.7 billion).

Shooting at draft office in Poltava Oblast leaves 2 soldiers injured
Initially dismissed as an exaggeration fuelled by Russian disinformation networks, the violent grabbing of military-aged men off the streets — often into waiting minivans — by recruitment officers has become a widely spread practice, as Ukraine's manpower shortage on the battlefield comes hand-in-hand with less civilian men looking to volunteer, especially to the infantry. This practice has in turn led to incidents of violence committed against the recruitment officers, many of whom are soldiers deemed unfit for combat missions. Earlier on Oct. 30, residents of Odesa attacked recruitment officers at a large wholesale market while they were at work.

Judge says Greenpeace must pay $345 million in pipeline lawsuit, cutting jury amount nearly in half
A North Dakota judge has ordered Greenpeace to pay damages of $345 million, reducing an earlier jury award after it found the environmental group and related entities liable for defamation and other claims in connection with protests of an oil pipeline nearly a decade ago. The new amount is roughly half the $667 million that a jury had awarded to the pipeline company that brought the claims, Dallas-based Energy Transfer and subsidiary Dakota Access.

Pentagon orders states’ national guards to form ‘quick reaction forces’ for ‘crowd control’
The memo, signed on 8 October by Maj Gen Ronald Burkett, the director of operations for the Pentagon’s national guard bureau, sets thresholds for the size of the quick reaction force to be trained in each state, with most states required to train 500 national guard members, for a total of 23,500 troops nationwide.

Advocates want public involvement when nursing homes change ownership
The slate of investigations and new operators’ previous track records have raised questions about how Vermont vets prospective operators and protects residents, under a longstanding process that was supposed to be only temporary. Corrective plans and subsequent inspections have recently led the facilities to achieve compliance with state regulations. But advocates say there should be policy changes to improve the state’s review process of new ownership, to preempt and root out the problem of poor care.

Venezuela Case: Oil, Capital, and Class Struggle
Examining how control over oil resources fuels imperialist ambitions and what a socialist perspective offers as an alternative Venezuela stands once again at the crossroads of imperialist aggression and national resistance. Its oil-rich soil − potentially a foundation of social progress and independence − remains the object of fierce contest between foreign capital, domestic oligarchs, and bureaucratic interests. While this wealth should belong to the Venezuelan people, it continues to be treated as a commodity for global profiteers. Recently, Donald Trump and U.S.-backed figures like Maria Corina Machado have stepped into the spotlight, pushing privatization schemes and openly aligning with corporate interests. Their rhetoric of “freedom” and “democracy” conceals a brutal reality: a plan to hand over Venezuela’s national wealth to imperialist monopolies, deepening inequality and exploiting the working class. In this renewed struggle over oil, capital, and sovereignty, the stakes could not be higher − not only for Venezuela but for all workers confronting imperialist domination worldwide.

Big Employers Using AI to Decimate White Collar Jobs; What Happens When Real Incomes, Employment, and Social Compacts Erode?
Seemmingly contradictory processes are at work. We may have reached peak AI, at least in terms of growth of use of the seemingly dominant type, large language models, which are conflated with “generative AI” (sticklers are encouraged to clear up fine points in comments). Several key growth measures are stalling out or even falling. Yet a wave of igh profile employers like Amazon, UPS, and Walmart announcing of big headcount cuts, citing AI implementation as the driver of the firings, says AI uptake is gaining steam. What gives? And more important, even if AI is not performing all that well in terms of accuracy and reliabilty, that may not matter much as long as it is (barely) good enough to corporate executives to screw down furhter on workers, here in comparatively well-paid white collar roles, to the benefit of their bonuses and shareholders. While an AI bubble crash (and accompanying reports of AI not living up to its promise) may put this trend on pause or even in reverse, if this trend continues at its current pace and intensity, it will further damage the career and income prospects of college educated workers, most of all recent graduates, so as to be counter-revolutionary. It will upend the heretofore tacitly accepted responsiblity of governments and the managerial classes to provide for an adequate level of employment and social safety nets in a system that requires most of the population to sell its labor as a condition of survival. It will also reverse the virtous circle created by Henry Ford1 of giving workers steady enough jobs at high enough pay levels that they could afford to buy the new products made possible by widespread electrification and the mass uptake of automobiles….including in due course suburban homes. And it will further erode class mobilty, aka The American Dream. The further thinning of the already increasingly precarious middle class will also greatly weaken social stability, particularly at a time when social safety nets are being gutted. Go long bodyguard services. While we don’t have definitive answers on what is happening in Corporate America, particularly given the diversity of the perps, at least one motivation is to take advantage of the AI mania, still very much alive in the markets, and goose the stock by wrapping what is largely good old fashioned work force squeezing/process re-engineering in the AI mantle (although CEOs are going to some lengths to depict AI implementations as pervasive). We may get a better grip on what is happening internally in the coming months. On the one hand, a well-publicized MIT study found that 95% of corporate pilots of AI did not pan out. On the other hand, there are more and more breathless stories of big employers and professional services firms reducing hiring, particularly of newbies, and even, slashing white collar staff levels. So is the way to square this circle that AI actually does not perform well, save as a weapon in class warfare?
