Germany’s hard-left icon steps down as leader of populist party she founded
“I will continue to be active in a leadership role within BSW,” Wagenknecht said. “And I will continue to support the party with great commitment on its path ahead and in the next election campaigns.” BSW, a party that merges elements of hard-left and hard-right politics — an ideology Wagenknecht has dubbed “left conservativism” — surged in national polls shortly after its creation and was particularly popular in the former East Germany, where the party won parliamentary seats in two states.

Tens of thousands in Portugal protest proposed new labour laws
Saturday’s protest, called by the trade unions, was in opposition to a planned revision of employment laws that Prime Minister Luis Montenegro’s government says is aimed at improving productivity and flexibility in the job market. Opponents say it threatens workers’ rights and should be withdrawn. Demonstrators carried posters that read “no to the labour package” and called for higher wages.

Water levels below 3% in dam reservoirs for Iran’s second city, say reports
Authorities in Tehran warned over the weekend of possible rolling cuts to water supplies in the capital amid what officials call the worst drought in decades. The Iranian president, Masoud Pezeshkian, has cautioned that without rainfall before winter, even Tehran could face evacuation. In the capital, five major dams supplying drinking water are at “critical” levels, with one empty and another at less than 8% of capacity, officials say.

Israel pushes Lebanon army to search more intrusively for Hezbollah arms, sources say
Lebanon's army fears that residents of the south would see house raids as subservience to Israel, which occupied south Lebanon for nearly two decades until 2000 before entering again last year, the Lebanese security officials said. Beirut also worries that Israel will keep moving the goalposts, creating a permanent risk of escalatory strikes and undermining attempts to stabilise a country battered by geopolitical and economic upheavals, the security officials and a political official said.

Bulacan residents mark initial victory for PrimeWater contract termination
The Water for the People Network (WPN) lauded the residents of San Jose del Monte, Bulacan on November 3 for successfully terminating the joint venture agreement (JVA) between their local water district (LWD) and PrimeWater. The decision resulted from the broad and relentless struggle of the Alliance for Consumer Protection, the People’s Rights Network, and the residents who opposed water services privatization. Despite the JVA’s complete termination, residents know that the fight is not yet over. None of the 15 LWDs that sought to end their contracts with PrimeWater this year have successfully withdrawn from the company.

New Delhi police detain dozens in anti-pollution protests
Indian police detained dozens of people during a rare protest at the famed India Gate monument in New Delhi demanding action to curb an annual scourge of toxic air swathing the capital and its surrounding region. Sunday's protest by crowds of all ages holding banners and chanting slogans before police bundled them away was a scarce event, even though Delhi and the national capital region have battled such fumes every winter for years.

Australian welfare recipients far below the poverty line
The report shows that 3.7 million people, or 14.2 percent of the population, were living in poverty in 2022–23. This includes 757,000 children, many from single-parent households, who are among the most at risk. The report uses the Melbourne Institute’s “poverty line” calculation, based on 50 percent of median household after-tax income: $584 per week for a single adult, or $1,226 a week for a couple with two children.

Terrorist turf war battle in north-eastern Nigeria leaves about 200 dead
The fighting between Boko Haram and rival militants from Islamic State West Africa Province (Iswap) broke out over the weekend in the village of Dogon Chiku, which lies on the shores of Lake Chad, a restive area located at the junction of Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon. The lake’s riverine corridors serve as operational zones for jihadists who also bank on revenues from taxing fishers, loggers and herders.

Angry Democrats call on Schumer to resign after eight vote to end shutdown
Democrats are seething after news emerged on Sunday that eight members of their Senate caucus had collaborated with Republicans on crafting a compromise to end the longest government shutdown in US history, without winning any healthcare concessions that they had sought. But one name is coming in for more opprobrium than any other: Chuck Schumer, the Senate minority leader who had led the Democrats’ weeks-long stand against reopening the government without an extension of tax credits that lower premiums for Affordable Care Act (ACA) health plans.

Trump officials set to approve ‘forever chemical’ as pesticide ingredient
At least 60% of active ingredients approved for use in common pesticides over the last 10 years fit the most widely accepted definition of Pfas, and about 40% overall, a 2023 analysis of EPA data found. The chemicals are used as an active ingredient in pesticides to kill weeds, insects or fleas on pets. When included as inactive ingredients, Pfas are likely to be used as surfactants and to help the chemicals disperse or be absorbed.

Teachers Get Death Threats After MAGA Claims Their Halloween Costumes Mocked Charlie Kirk
While Kolvet acknowledged Carruth’s statement and admitted in a post on X later on Saturday that the costumes had been worn the year previously, he did not remove his original post. “It's a very weird costume for teachers in general, but after what happened to Charlie, I'm absolutely floored they wore it again,” Kolvet wrote. “I do not believe for a second that all of them are innocent.”

(Chapo Trap House) 985 - The Murder Inc. Doctrine feat. Greg Grandin (11/10/25)
As we inch closer to war with Venezuela, historian Greg Grandin returns to Chapo for a history lesson about the War on Drugs as well as Venezuela’s Bolivarian Revolution. We also talk about the US’s long-running economic interests and petty feuds in Latin America, particularly regarding the region’s oil supplies. We then briefly speculate about just how bad and chaotic a regime change operation against Venezuela might be for the US and Latin America.

CP of Greece, The provocations and anti-KKE slanders will fail once again
The so-called World Anti-Imperialist Platform (WAP) —the apologists for the Russian and Chinese bourgeoisie in their imperialist competition with the US and the Euro-Atlantic camp— are once again exposed. At a time when they indulge into fantasies about “anti-imperialist axes” and “anti-fascist fronts”, they remain silent about the fascist meeting of the “Paladins” held a few weeks ago in St. Petersburg. Under the official auspices of the Russian state and the ruling United Russia party, fascist scum from all over the world assembled there, including members of the Nazi Golden Dawn party. Led by the well-known anti-KKE obsessive Patelis, theoretical instructor of the WAP, they know believe that they have found an opportunity to launch a vulgar offensive against the KKE and the parties with which it cooperates. This time, they are targeting the Communist Party of Venezuela and, through it, the KKE, repeating the absurd claim that the CP of Venezuela (and, by extension, the KKE) is aligned with the forces of María Corina Machado — forces that call on the US to intervene militarily to overthrow the Maduro government.

Democrats Caved in the Shutdown Fight. Unions Let Them.
In a spectacular act of cowardice and idiocy last night, seven Democratic Party senators and one independent voted to end the shutdown on Republicans’ terms, squandering their momentum and leverage. Bernie Sanders laid out the likely consequences of this capitulation: "It raises health care premiums for over twenty million Americans by doubling, in some cases, tripling or quadrupling, and it paves the way for fifteen million people to be thrown off of Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. Studies show that some 50,000 Americans will die every year unnecessarily — and all that was done to give a trillion dollars in tax breaks to the 1 percent." Countless Americans today are rightfully incensed not only at the senators who caved but also at Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer, who let this capitulation happen. But there’s one more group that deserves our anger today: top union leaders. The major domino to set off last night’s capitulation was the decision by the American Federation of Government Employees’ (AFGE) national leadership on October 27 to call on Democrats to end the shutdown on Donald Trump’s terms — without any guarantees for tens of millions of Americans’ health care coverage. The main rationale provided by AFGE president Everett Kelley was that his members were suffering economically from the shutdown. There’s no doubt that this hurt is very real, and I do not doubt the sincerity of Kelley’s commitment to his membership. But AFGE’s leadership could have decided to pressure Republicans rather than Democrats to end the shutdown. That was a political choice. Rank-and-file AFGE members this morning released an open letter calling on their national leadership to oppose the deal. As one rank-and-file AFGE member wrote to me last night, “Many of us are furious at AFGE leadership. . . . Even if AFGE leaders thought the shutdown had become too costly, they could’ve put the blame squarely on the Republicans who can reopen the gov at any time by changing the senate rules.” And far from surrendering after putting up a hard fight, AFGE from day one of this shutdown has refused to provide any serious red lines for the Republicans and has refused to launch any real pressure campaigns against them.
