Alabama Public Television considers cutting ties with PBS
Alabama Public Television Executive Director Wayne Reid said some commissioners asked him to research the possibility and ramifications of ending the contract with PBS. Ending the affiliation would cause APT to lose access to popular programs such as “Sesame Street” and “PBS NewsHour”, as well as its ability to distribute content on streaming platforms. Reid said the state network would have to buy other programming to replace it.

The Problem With James Talarico’s Gambling Ties
There is one issue where Talarico’s positions are discordant with many other Christians, progressive or conservative. As Politico reported back in August, Talarico has received tens of thousands of dollars from a political action committee (PAC) backed by GOP megadonor Miriam Adelson. Although Adelson is perhaps best known for her Israel advocacy, her and her late husband’s wealth is tied up in casinos. And it was the Texas Sands PAC, which is working hard to expand legal gambling in Texas, that gave Talarico $59,000 from February through December of 2024. That made the PAC Talarico’s largest financial supporter during his time in the legislature last year. The likely reason why they are backing him is that Talarico is an ardent supporter of legalizing casino gambling in Texas. He voted in favor of a bill that would’ve put the question to Texas voters through a constitutional amendment. While Talarico has been a rising star in progressive circles, his support for expanding legal gambling has alarmed advocates who see it as irreconcilable with his stated values. “The one word that comes to mind to describe his position would be hypocrisy,” said Les Bernal, the executive director of Stop Predatory Gambling, a national group that advocates against legal gambling. “If he [is] studying the Gospel, he must have missed the reading where Jesus says ‘Love others like I love you.’ Because casino gambling especially is a prime example of loving yourself more than your neighbor because it’s a business based on greed, manipulation, and exploitation.”

When I joined the Scottish Green party in 2001, the Greens had around 6,000 members across their three UK parties (in Scotland, England and Wales, and Northern Ireland). Recently, roughly the same number joined in one day. In England and Wales alone, The Green party has overtaken the Tories with a record 150,000 members – two and a half times the number it had when Zack Polanski announced he was running for leader in May. Much credit for this membership explosion goes to Polanski, with his easy charisma, willingness to embrace controversy and clear, leftwing messaging. But this “eco-populism”, though represented by Polanski, did not begin with him. Polanski is the conclusion of a much longer story: the story of how the Greens became an explicitly leftwing party.

When I was invited to come to Boston, the invitation reached me at about the same time as an official information that a reorganization of the party was contemplated in the city of Boston. I put the two together and I drew the conclusion that part of the purpose of the invitation was for me to come here to tell you upon what lines we in New York organized, and upon what lines we “wicked” Socialists of New York and Brooklyn gave the capitalist class last November the 16,000-vote black eye.
ORGANIZATION: It has become an axiom that, to accomplish results, organization is requisite. Nevertheless, there is “organization” and “organization." That this is so appears clearly from the fact that the “pure-and-simplers” have been going about saying to the workers: “Organize! Organize!” and after they have been saying that, and have been “organizing” and “organizing” for the past thirty or forty years, we find that they are virtually where they started, if not worse off; that their “organization” partakes of the nature of the lizard, whose tail destroys what his foreparts build up. I think the best thing I can do to aid you in organizing is to give you the principles upon which the Socialist sections of New York and Brooklyn are organized. To do that I shall go back to basic principles, and in explaining to you the difference there is between reform and revolution, I shall be able, step by step, to point out how it is we are organized, and how you ought to be.
