I would say that non-communist progressives are more annoying than any group of people who call themselves communist.

Getting dragged into an arms race with the US is in big part why the USSR ended up like it did, and China has done a better job at hurting US hegemony.

I think China is playing a long game, they don't get involved in some hot geopolitical situation, I think they would only act if, and only if, they know for certain that they can win, they don't want to waste resource and people getting boggle down in wars or geopolitial dispute when they still need to be better as a country.
