German MPs rubberstamp military service plan amid school pupil protests
The change will include the obligatory screening of all 18-year-old men to gauge their suitability to serve in the military from 1 January, but does not include conscription, as favoured by some conservative politicians. If the model fails to pull in enough recruits, parliament will be compelled to discuss the reintroduction of conscription, the defence minister, Boris Pistorius, told the Bundestag.

16 students arrested in Turkey for protesting deaths of child workers
On Wednesday, teachers staged a protest at the same location, declaring, “We are teachers; we will not allow our children to be killed,” and demanding the closure of MESEMs. Subsequently, four teachers, including the general president of the grassroots union, were detained. While the prosecutor requested judicial control and a ban on leaving the country for the detained teachers, the court rejected this request and the teachers were released.

Crisis and division grip Bolivia’s new right-wing government
During the election campaign, Lara famously declared: “I’m the guarantee—if [President] Rodrigo Paz doesn’t deliver, I’ll confront him.” True to his word, he has turned against the president, denouncing him as a “liar” and “cynic” for bowing to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Lara now accuses Paz of betraying voters by adopting the same austerity policies he attributed to his even more right-wing electoral rival, former Bolivian President Jorge Tuto Quiroga—spending cuts, tax breaks for the wealthy, and hollow relief for the poor.

Poverty in Latin America is declining, but not evenly
A quick footnote in the report reveals a more accurate picture of the region. In reality, across the vast majority of Latin America and the Caribbean, poverty reduction has stagnated, and it’s only the progress of Mexico and Brazil, especially Mexico, that is leading to an overall reduction throughout Latin America.

Workers demand implementation of minimum wage in Pakistan
The protesters shouted slogans against the government claiming it has failed to address the basic concerns of the workers in the country, most of whom are struggling to fulfill their basic needs despite working overtime. Protesters accompanied by a large number of women and children also raised the issue of rising prices of basic commodities such as wheat flour which make it even more difficult for them to live a decent life on such low salaries.

DoJ moves to eliminate sexual abuse protections for LGBTQ+ people in prisons
A justice department memo issued on Tuesday said “effective immediately”, prisons and jails will no longer be held responsible for violations of standards meant to shield LGBTQ+ people from harassment, abuse and rape. It also directed inspectors to stop auditing facilities for compliance with those protections. The justice department is in the process of seeking formal updates to the rules, the memo said.

A nationwide internet age verification plan is sweeping Congress
The new approach to age verification orders mobile app stores to verify users’ ages, then send that information to apps when users download them. The idea has been around for a while, but it was just this year that the first of these laws was passed in Utah, quickly followed by versions in several other states. On Tuesday, it appeared in Congress as part of a package of kids safety legislation as the App Store Accountability Act (ASA), earlier introduced by Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Rep. John James (R-MI).

Democrat announces articles of impeachment against Hegseth
The long-shot effort centers on two scandals currently rocking the Pentagon — a new report about Signalgate and allegations of a follow-up strike against an alleged Venezuelan drug boat. Thanedar may struggle to garner support for his proposal even from his own party, however: House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has already dismissed the viability of trying to impeach Hegseth.

Outgoing New York City mayor Eric Adams signs anti-BDS law
New York State already has an anti-BDS law. By signing one for New York City, Adams has effectively cornered mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, a longtime advocate of BDS, to either support the text or overturn it, both of which would likely elicit outrage. New York City has the largest number of Jews outside of Israel, numbering about one million. There are nearly as many Muslims in the city, though Mamdani's win hinged on progressives of all stripes banding together to support him.

Tenured US professor fired over pro-Palestinian protests contests dismissal
Sang Hea Kil, a longtime member of the university’s justice studies department and a faculty adviser for its Students for Justice in Palestine chapter, is the latest in a growing list of university professors and staff who have been suspended, investigated and in some cases dismissed or forced out in connection to the wave of pro-Palestinian protests that swept US campuses in the first year of Israel’s war in Gaza.

Author and journalist Seth Harp returns for an interview about the National Guard shooting in D.C. We analyze the accused shooter, his time in covert “Zero Units,” and we also speculate about the ramifications of Pete Hegseth’s double-tap order in the Caribbean. To close things out, Will and Felix talk about Bari Weiss’s plan to return America to the reasonable center and react to the viral Oklahoma University essay on why God made man and woman different.

Starmer’s current chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, served as the head of a machine that targeted media outlets on the left and right, foreshadowing the UK’s crackdown on dissent.
As Keir Starmer rose to power in Britain, the political machine responsible for his rise ran a behind-the-scenes campaign to demonetize the U.S. news outlet Breitbart. The attacks on Breitbart were part of a targeted campaign against media outlets on both the left and right considered hostile to the centrist faction of the Labour Party, according to a trove of documents that expose the operation. Many of the documents were revealed for the first time in my recent book – called “The Fraud: Keir Starmer, Morgan McSweeney and the Crisis of British Democracy” – and are expanded on significantly there. The campaign succeeded in effectively destroying the left-wing British outlet The Canary, which is only now recovering. Breitbart News persists. The project was run through an organization called Stop Funding Fake News (SFFN). SFFN was incubated and resourced by a think-tank called Labour Together under the guise of fighting misinformation and “fake news.” Between 2018 and 2020, the anodyne-seeming think-tank received £739,000 in donations that it failed to report to the UK Electoral Commission, in violation of electoral law. Labour Together was found guilty and fined in September 2021 for the offense. Morgan McSweeney, now Sir Keir Starmer’s chief of staff, was Labour Together’s company secretary during this period. He also listed himself on LinkedIn as Labour Together’s “Managing Director.” In October 2024, the prominent UK journalist Andrew Marr commented that McSweeney held a position “of unparalleled power in Labour Party history.”

Zohran Mamdani Can Reduce New York’s Dependence on the Rich
Zohran Mamdani ran his campaign for New York City on two messages: making the city affordable and taxing the rich. This has been a winning formula for many progressive candidates for more than a century. But history also reveals a more sobering lesson: you can’t finance progressive policies with a regressive economy. Social democracy in New York City and elsewhere has repeatedly learned this lesson the hard way. To be fiscally dependent upon the same wealthy individuals and firms who displace working-class residents, contest our policies, and undermine our public finances is profoundly self-defeating. That’s why past progressives and socialists, from the Knights of Labor to the Wisconsin sewer socialists, didn’t just look to tax wealthy individuals and firms — they looked to diversify urban economies so they wouldn’t depend as much on the wealthy to begin with. By cultivating public enterprises and worker-owned firms, and by aspiring to build economies organized around the needs of working-class residents, these radicals tried to create cities that delivered affordability and justice. They recognized that letting the private economy produce ever more inequality, then trying to tax those at the top to redistribute sufficiently to everyone else to correct structural imbalances, was an impossible task. For genuinely progressive economic policy to take root and succeed, taxes on the wealthy need to be paired with revenue from flourishing working-class economic sectors. Redistribution must be paired with predistribution. That’s the lesson we should take from New York City’s recent economic history, and it’s one that Mamdani must apply if he is to be successful.
