Taiwan’s ban on mainland China app RedNote makes it a top download amid fierce pushback
The island’s interior ministry announced on Thursday it had ordered local telecoms and internet providers to block access to the app, also known as Xiaohongshu, for one year over “rising online fraud cases”. Authorities also cited a “lack of cooperation from its operator in Shanghai”. But the move has unleashed a wave of public criticism, with many accusing Taiwan’s ruling independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of overreach and damaging the island’s reputation for open internet access.

Powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake strikes Japan's northeast
Tsunami warnings were issued for the prefectures of Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate, and tsunamis from 20 to 70 cm (7 to 27 inches) high were observed at several ports, JMA said. In the early hours of Tuesday the JMA downgraded the warnings to advisories, meaning it now sees lower estimated wave heights and less risk of inundation.

However, heavy rain is forecast for parts of the island in the coming days, raising concerns for displaced people.

‘Yellow line’ that divides Gaza under Trump plan is ‘new border’ for Israel, says military chief
The Israeli army has built new concrete outposts along the “yellow line” to fortify its positions and declared it a lethal boundary, even though it is not always clearly marked and a ceasefire is in place. Soldiers have repeatedly killed Palestinians they accuse of crossing it, including young children. Concrete bollards laid out to mark some stretches of the line have also been used to expand Israel’s military occupation of Gaza. Satellite images show that some markers have been placed hundreds of metres beyond the boundary agreed on ceasefire maps.

US attack on Venezuela risks ‘Vietnam-style’ regional conflict, warns Lula adviser
“If there was an invasion, a real invasion … I think undoubtedly you would see something similar to Vietnam – on what scale it’s impossible to say,” added Amorim, who thought even some enemies of Venezuela’s authoritarian leader, Nicolás Maduro, would be inclined to join the resistance against such a foreign intervention.

ANC-SACP rift exposed: Madala Masuku heckled by delegates at National General Council over election plans
Masuku eventually addressed the delegates on the decision of the SACP to contest the elections alone. “The decision to contest elections is not to contest the ANC. The decision to contest elections is contestation of elections, and this matter is a very critical matter because it has to do with the existential being of the party (SACP) because if the party cannot introduce socialism as a path, its existence will mean nothing.” Masuku says the SACP still remains committed to the alliance.

Trump says AI executive order targeting state laws coming this week
The executive order isn't likely to try to block state AI laws outright. Instead, it's expected to attempt to gut state AI laws by launching legal challenges and conditioning federal grants on compliance. This approach has far less teeth than legislation — and will certainly face legal challenges.

Shapiro's strategy for 2028 White House run starts with 2026
Shapiro has quietly and methodically tightened his grip on Pennsylvania's Democratic machine in recent months — recruiting key congressional candidates, clearing the field for them and remaking the state party. When the Feds Come to Your City: Standing Up to ICE
Are masked agents showing up in your town to kidnap your neighbors? Want to do your part to protect each other, but don’t know where to start? We hope this guide will help you prepare to stand up to federal agencies like Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as they attempt to abduct people from your community. The guide is not exhaustive—it could not be—but it is based on the knowledge that an array of people have accumulated in Chicago over the past several months during “Operation Midway Blitz.” As federal agents expand their assaults on communities across the country, it is crucial to share and build on these practices. Because the mercenaries who work for ICE and other federal agencies are constantly updating their strategies in response to popular resistance, a guide like this is chiefly useful for getting started thinking about how to resist. We encourage you to draw on this guide for ideas while adapting them to the local context that you and your neighbors know best.

42 Years of the EZLN, “One of the Hearts of the Anti-capitalist Movement”
The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) recently celebrated its 42nd anniversary, marking its founding on November 17th, 1983, when a group established a camp in the Lacandon Jungle to begin the first stage of organizing the movement in indigenous communities of Chiapas. This silent movement burst onto the world stage a little over a decade later when it took up arms on January 1st, 1994, to demonstrate its radical opposition to the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) signed by Canada, the United States, and Mexico, then governed by Carlos Salinas de Gortari, the political emblem of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Since then, the EZLN has shaken the global political scene by proposing an ideology that, contrary to the long tradition of Latin American guerrilla organizations, did not aim to seize control of the state apparatus but—in the words of the intellectual John Holloway, who masterfully defined it in a resounding phrase—”to change the world without taking power.” Three decades ago, on a continent dominated by neoliberal administrations, the emergence of Zapatismo represented a novelty capable of outlining a new horizon for the collective social imagination. It spread its ideology and methods while always emphasizing that in specific territories, it was the local collectives that had to confront their own processes, “each in their own way.” The magnetic figure of Insurgent Sub-commander Marcos (now Captain, in another singular demonstration that there, leaders “come down” rather than continue to ascend the hierarchy) with his remarkable literary rhetoric broadened the subjective base of the movement and facilitated its penetration, transcending both physical and ideological boundaries.

Mark Fisher: How to kill a zombie: strategizing the end of neoliberalism
Why has the left made so little progress five years after a major crisis of capitalism discredited neoliberalism? Since 2008, neoliberalism might have been deprived of the feverish forward momentum it once possessed, but it is nowhere near collapsing. Neoliberalism now shambles on as zombie - but as the afficionados of zombie films are well aware, it is sometimes harder to kill a zombie than a living person. At the conference in York, Milton Friedman’s notorious remark was quoted a number of times: “Only a crisis – actual or perceived – produces real change. When that crisis occurs, the actions that are taken depend on the ideas that are lying around. That, I believe, is our basic function: to develop alternatives to existing policies, to keep them alive and available until the politically impossible becomes the politically inevitable.” The problem is that although the 2008 crisis was caused by neoliberal policies, those selfsame policies remain practically the only ones “lying around”. As a consequence, neoliberalism is still politically inevitable. It is by no means clear that the public has ever embraced neoliberal doctrines with much enthusiasm – but what people have been persuaded of is the idea that there is no alternative to neoliberalism. The (typically reluctant) acceptance of this state of affairs is the hallmark of capitalist realism. Neoliberalism may not have succeeded in making itself more attractive than other systems, but it has sold itself as the only “realistic” mode of governance. The sense of “realism” here is a hard worn political achievement, and neoliberalism has succeeded in imposing a model of reality modeled on practices and assumptions coming out of the business world.
