Casualty rises to 23 | Seven more civilians injured, including a girl, amid ongoing shelling in Al-Sheikh Maqsoud and Al-Ashrafiyah
According to SOHR local sources, interim government forces targeted Sheikh Maqsoud and Al-Ashrafieh with mortar shells and heavy machine guns of the “DShK” type, in parallel with direct clashes on several fronts inside the two neighbourhoods, causing widespread panic among civilians. In the same context, SOHR sources reported that seven injured people were taken to Al-Razi Hospital in Aleppo city, including two members of the Civil Defence, as a result of the shelling and ongoing clashes. Meanwhile, the Gaziantep–Aleppo road was closed from the Al-Layramoun roundabout side, following sniper fire attributed to SDF targeting the vicinity of Sheihan Roundabout, amid heightened security deployment.

Turkish FM casts doubt on Kurdish integration in Syria
Ankara says the SDF presence along its southern borders poses a security threat to both Turkey and Syria, and that the Damascus government must address this. It has said any integration must ensure the SDF is disbanded - in line with a disarmament process between outlawed Kurdish PKK militants and the Turkish state - and its chain of command broken.

Israel's new NGO rules risk leaving hundreds of thousands of Gazans without healthcare in 2026, MSF warns
The new requirements threaten to withdraw registration from international non-governmental organisations (INGOs) from January 1. This non-registration would prevent humanitarian organisations from providing essential services to people in Gaza and the West Bank, MSF said today. “With Gaza’s health system already destroyed, independent and experienced humanitarian organisations losing access to respond would be a disaster for Palestinians,” MSF said.

Chants of ‘globalise the intifada’, the phrase Minns wants to ban, at Sydney rally against proposed protest law changes
A crowd of 300 at Sydney’s town hall observed a minute’s silence for the victims of the Bondi shooting and briefly chanted “globalise the intifada” at a protest some feared would be their last for months. Chants followed an address by Sara Saleh, a human rights lawyer with Palestinian heritage, who condemned the shooting at Bondi but emphasised that she did not want any children to die like the attack’s youngest victim, 10-year-old Matilda. “That is precisely why I intend to keep saying, ‘Globalise the intifada, free Palestine,’” Saleh said.

Japan prepares to restart world's biggest nuclear plant, 15 years after Fukushima
Japan took the final step to allow the world's largest nuclear power plant to resume operations with a regional vote on Monday, a watershed moment in the country's return to nuclear energy nearly 15 years after the Fukushima disaster. Kashiwazaki-Kariwa, located about 220 km (136 miles) northwest of Tokyo, was among 54 reactors shut after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami crippled the Fukushima Daiichi plant in the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.

Thailand to resume ceasefire talks with Cambodia on Wednesday, foreign minister says
Cambodia has publicly said it is ready for an unconditional ceasefire, but Bangkok says it hasn’t received any direct proposal and believes such statements are aimed at increasing international pressure, rather than resolving the issue, Mr Sihasak said. The general border committee involving both nations will meet on Wednesday to iron out detailed measures toward a lasting ceasefire, he said.

Ukrainians in Poland face growing resentment
Many things have combined to bring about this change of feeling. Resentment has been stoked by disinformation and viral videos online. Moreover, the election of rightwing populist Karol Nawrocki as president in June 2025 followed an acrimonious campaign which shifted the whole political debate further to the right. Ukrainians are more often portrayed as ungrateful and hungry for benefits, despite economic data showing they are net contributors to the Polish economy.

Bolivian unions announce indefinite strike to defeat ‘gasolinazo’ decree in first big battle with new president
Mr Paz has abolished the Environment Ministry. His government contrasts with the Movement Towards Socialism administrations of 2006-19 and 2020-25 in having no indigenous ministers or ministers from a trade union or peasant association background, with most coming instead from international finance or development agencies.

Ecuadorian court hands down max sentences to 11 soldiers in case of 4 disappeared minors
The soldiers convicted on Monday are expected to face a murder trial for the deaths of the children next year. The remains of the children — aged 11 to 15 — were found in December 2024, a few weeks after they were reported missing. Ecuador’s military has been patrolling the streets of some cities since January 2024, when Noboa issued a decree saying his country was in an “internal armed conflict.

Colombia’s government to declare economic emergency after Senate sinks finance bill
According to Finance Minister German Avila, the gap threatens the basic functioning of government and leaves the government with no choice but to declare an economic emergency. President Gustavo Petro said earlier his month that as long as his administration is in power, “we will not let the poor pay for” the deficit. By declaring an economic emergency, the government will appropriate the extraordinary and temporary right to impose taxes that would alleviate the crisis by decree.

Watchdog Celebrates Victory Over Instacart Pricing Scheme—But Says Broader Corporate Abuse Remains
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) took notice of the report, saying it was “disturbed” by the findings, and launched an investigation on Thursday, which caused the company’s stock price to plummet by about 7%. It also attracted attention from members of Congress, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who demanded government action on what he called “shakedown pricing.” Instacart agreed that same day to pay the FTC $60 million in a settlement for what the commission said was “a variety of deceptive tactics that misled consumers and caused them to pay more in fees.”

US pauses offshore wind projects over security concerns
In a statement, the Department of the Interior said it was pausing five large-sale projects to look into how windmills could interfere with radar and create other risks to east coast cities. President Donald Trump has long opposed wind energy, saying it is unreliable and drives up costs, and attempted to stop all projects when he returned to office. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has said wind farms have no future in the US energy grid.

Democratic-led states sue to block US consumer watchdog's defunding under Trump
Last month, the CFPB under Vought's leadership said it could not request more money from the Fed because the Dodd-Frank Act of 2010 requires that funding come from the central bank's "combined earnings." Since the Fed had been operating at a loss since 2022, the Trump administration said no earnings were available. The CFPB in a November 10 court filing said it expected its funds would run out in early 2026.

Baltimore residents rally against BGE rate hikes, demanding public utility options
On Saturday, Baltimore residents, energy justice organizers, and elected officials rallied at City Hall to protest utility rate hikes, utility debt, and shutoffs by Baltimore Gas and Electric. Yet, protesters weren't just opposing BGE; they were also campaigning for a publicly controlled utility that they say would create some competition and help lower rates.

Weiss told top "60 Minutes" producers that delayed segment had problems
"At present, we do not present the administration's argument for why it sent 252 Venezuelans to CECOT," the memo says. "What we have is Karoline Leavitt's soundbite claiming they are evildoers in America (rapists, murderers, etc.). But isn't there much more to ask in light of the torture that we are revealing? Tom Homan and Stephen Miller don't tend to be shy. I realize we've emailed the DHS spox, but we need to push much harder to get these principals on the record."

Keir Starmer’s Government Is Leaving the Hunger Strikers to Die
By the standards of even the most forgiving and lenient Santa, it can’t be said that Keir Starmer’s government has been good this year. We’ve seen a manifesto-breaching budget that was leaked ahead of time, embarrassing U-turns on scrapping the two-child benefit cap, welfare reform and cutting pensioners’ winter fuel payments, and bursts of vicious briefing and leadership plot speculation amid Labour’s increasingly dire polling figures. Then there were the Tommy Robinson-approved plans for asylum seekers, support for Israeli football hooligans’ right to rampage through Birmingham and yet more cabinet cowardice over Israel’s continuous campaign of ethnic cleansing in Gaza. And if this wasn’t enough to warrant a lump of coal in the government’s stocking on Christmas morning, 2025 also saw Starmer’s weaponisation of anti-terror law in the form of the proscription of Palestine Action, ie protecting UK sites of Israel’s largest arms manufacturer while nanas in their 80s get carried off by cops. With parliament’s Christmas hiatus beckoning, there’s one shameful chapter left wide open: the six hunger-striking prisoners, who become more likely to sustain irreversible physical damage or die with every hour of government inaction.

Chile Applies New Anti-Terrorism Law to Mapuche Youths; Prison Denies Basic Rights
In Wallmapu, Chile, the situation of Mapuche youths Lientur Millacheo and Jaime Huenchuñir—the first individuals in Chile to be prosecuted under the country’s newly revised Anti-Terrorism Law—has worsened, according to their spokeswomen. Both young men are currently held in the Temuco Penitentiary, where their families report that they have been subjected to torture and what they describe as direct political persecution by the Chilean State. We spoke with spokeswomen Alen Huenuche and Millaray Huenchuñir, as well as attorney Christian Arancibia, who is supporting the families. Millacheo and Huenchuñir remain in pretrial detention while prosecutors investigate their case under the new anti-terrorism framework—and could be legally held without trial for up to five years. In response, the Juana Millahual and Taiñ Meli Bolil Mapuche communities have issued a call for national and international solidarity, denouncing what they see as a politically motivated judicial process. Despite being recognized as Mapuche comuneros (community members), the two youths are being held with the general prison population. According to their spokeswomen, prison authorities have refused to transfer them to the Mapuche module, claiming that they do not meet internal prison requirements.

Karl Liebknecht: Revolutionary Socialism in Germany
What was the meaning of March 24, 1916? The eighteen delegates who finally decided on December 21, 1915, to vote against the first war credit, voted on March 24th openly against the proposed special war budget. While in December they issued a "declaration," they now gave the motives for their vote in a speech. The content of this speech, however, did not go beyond the declaration of December. Even the excuse that Germany was safe against invasion was again brought forward. What was it then that caused a sensation on March 24th? It was the wild uproar of the Socialist majority, together with the bourgeois parties, the infamous attitude of the president, the expulsion of the eighteen from the official party parliamentary group. But in this action, the eighteen were "object" and not "subject"; this action was forced upon them and they disliked a rupture so much, that they tried their best to avoid, still in January, 1916, an open break with the treacherous majority, as well as tumultuous scenes against bourgeois parties. And even now on March 24, 1916, they play the part of offended innocence rather than that of showing the clenched fist of rebellion. What, then, is the meaning of March 24th? A true opinion can only be formed in connection with the general situation. The new Arbeitsgemeinschaft are the same eighteen, the "neither flesh nor fish" policy of whom proved a failure in December and again in the submarine issue on March 22nd, and again in discussions March 23rd. Could you expect the lambs of yesterday to become all of a sudden lions?
