US demands Venezuela halt all economic ties with China, Russia, Iran and Cuba
ABC News reported on Tuesday that Washington had sent a demand to Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodriguez for her government to “kick out China, Russia, Iran, and Cuba and sever economic ties” with those nations. The report also said the White House was demanding that Caracas agree to “exclusive co-operation with the US in the field of oil production.” But Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told reporters: “Venezuela is a sovereign state, possessing full and inalienable sovereignty over its natural resources.

Burkina Faso authorities say new coup plot foiled, arrests underway
Speaking in a televised address, Burkina Faso’s Minister of Security, Mahamadou Sana, said the plan involved a coordinated effort to destabilise the country through a series of targeted assassinations. He stated that the plot was scheduled to begin at around 11 p.m. and would have targeted both civilian and military leaders. According to Sana, the alleged plan included attempts to neutralise the head of state, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, either at close range or through an operation aimed at mining his residence. “A plan was in place to destabilise the country through targeted assassinations,” the minister said.

UK watchdog fines ex-Carillion finance directors after they drop appeals

Adam and Khan had been fined 232,800 pounds and 138,900 pounds, respectively, after dropping their appeals, the FCA said in a statement, less than the 318,000 pounds and 154,400 pounds penalties the regulator set out in its 2022 decision notices.

Dozens of demonstrators, including some who were injured in September, recently have protested against the government they brought to power. These protests outside the prime minister’s office has been held in the past few weeks with police forced to break some of them.

South Korean leader says he asked China’s Xi to act as mediator on North Korea issues
China is North Korea’s biggest trading partner and major diplomatic backer. South Korea and the U.S. have repeatedly asked China to use its unique influence to persuade North Korea to resume long-dormant diplomacy or denuclearize. China has urged all parties involved in North Korean issues to exercise restraint, and in recent years repeatedly blocked the U.S. and others’ attempts to toughen sanctions on North Korea despite its weapons tests banned under U.N. resolutions.

What we know so far about the fatal ICE shooting of a Minneapolis woman
The footage shows multiple officers near an SUV stopped in the middle of the road. One officer demands the driver exit the vehicle and grabs the car handle. The SUV reverses, then begins to drive forward, which is when a different officer near the front of the car pulls his weapon and fires into the vehicle. Three gunshots are heard, as the firing officer backs away from the SUV. Moments later, the vehicle crashes.

Inside the Senate's last-gasp effort to solve the health care crisis
The bipartisan plan would reinstate the ACA enhanced subsides for two years and extend open enrollment into March, Moreno said, walking through policies that he says have "decent consensus." It will likely include income caps at 700% of the poverty line, replace $0 premium plans with $5 premiums and allow individuals to choose whether the enhanced subsidies go into Health Savings Accounts or directly toward premiums. The group has also discussed massive penalties on insurance companies that deliberately enroll people into Obamacare without their knowledge.

US immigration agents linked to spike in shootings under Trump administration crackdown
The figures probably underestimate the true number of incidents, since shootings involving immigration agents are not consistently made public, the Trace cautioned. Beyond shootings with firearms, 13 cases in which immigration agents used less-lethal weapons such as rubber bullets or pepper balls were also documented. Ten of those incidents took place during protests. Among those injured were two pastors who were shot with pepper balls while leading prayers at demonstrations in California and Illinois.

Gov. Bill Lee declines to secure millions in federal funds to feed Tennessee kids during summer
Despite the urging of county mayors, child advocates, clergy and educators, Gov. Bill Lee has declined to secure millions of dollars in federal funding to provide food to low-income kids by the government’s Jan. 1 deadline. Lee has remained quiet about the apparent decision to forgo approximately $84 million from the federal government’s Summer EBT program, also known as SUN Bucks. In the past, the federal funding has helped feed 700,000 Tennessee kids during summer months when school is out. The governor’s office, for weeks, has not responded to reporters’ questions about whether he planned to participate in the federal Summer EBT.

Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek now wants to scrap her newly passed transportation bill
The striking pivot comes after a Republican-led campaign successfully waylaid the heart of House Bill 3991: tax increases meant as a stopgap to fund the Oregon Department of Transportation. As lawmakers prepare to wrestle with a $242 million funding gap at ODOT, Kotek announced Wednesday that she now favors a “redirect, repeal and rebuild” approach. The “redirect”: passing a bill to free up money within ODOT’s budget that is currently dedicated to specific projects. That money could instead go toward basic road maintenance. State funding for public transit would not be touched.

Venezuela – Class struggle against imperialism and the myth of national independence
The attacks of the US army in Venezuela are an expression of imperialism, but how can we respond to them? Understandably, the reaction of many people is to rally for ‘national independence’. From a working class perspective and the perspective of international emancipation, the battle cry for ‘sovereignty’ is a dangerous myth. The situation in Venezuela is part of a global panorama of block confrontation and as international workers we have to find ways not to get crushed in the middle.

Iran: An Uprising Besieged from Within and Without
Starting on December 28, 2025, a new wave of protest broke out across Iran, triggered by economic distress and escalating to call for the toppling of the government. This is at least the fifth such movement in a decade, drawing on previous waves of labor unrest and feminist resistance. Yet within this uprising, the grassroots movement contends with reactionary monarchists, largely based outside Iran, who seek to win the backing of the United States and Israel to seize power. This comes in the midst of a tumultuous geopolitical situation. The Israeli government has intensified the bombing of Gaza and Lebanon and the seizure of land in Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria; it is preparing to construct a settlement that will cut the West Bank in half in order to make a Palestinian state impossible. The United States has just kidnapped the president of Venezuela and his wife in order to seize Venezuelan oil, signaling a readiness to go to great lengths to dominate people both inside and outside its borders. In the fall of 2024, protesters in Nepal and elsewhere demonstrated that it is still possible for social movements to overthrow governments. A successful revolution in Iran could set off a wave of change around the world. But if such a revolution were hijacked by reactionary forces, it could set movements for liberation back another generation or more. The stakes are high. We owe it to grassroots movements in Iran to learn about them and support them, both because they are confronting a desperate situation and to ensure that a puppet regime serving Israel and the United States cannot come to power. Here, we present three perspectives on the uprising of the past week and a half.

Antonio Gramsci: War is war
Woe betide the working class, if it allows, even for an instant, the fascists to carry out their plan in Turin, as they have done in other cities. Even the slightest weakness, the slightest hint of indecision could be fatal. The response of the workers to the fascists’ first try must be immediate, abrupt, ruthless; the response should be such that the memory of it is passed down to the great-grandchildren of capitalist masters. At the end of the day, war is war and in war it is not agreed when the blows will be struck. Meanwhile, the working class of Turin has already stated, in a motion of its political party, that it considers fascists as merely the means; the means of a movement which finds its true instigators, those who will really be responsible, in other places. Even La Stampa declared (on the 27 January, now five days ago) that, ‘the current powerful group (of fascists) is only favoured by shop keepers, industrialists, farmers’. In war and revolution, to take pity on ten is to be cruel to a thousand. The Hungarian working class wanted to take it easy on their oppressors; now it is paying for that decision, and working class women and children are too paying for their kindness. Pity for a thousand has brought with it misery, sorrow; complete despair to millions in the Hungarian proletariat. It is not agreed when the blows will be struck. The workers must be ever more relentless, since there is no relation between the pain that the working class suffers and the pain that capitalists suffer. …
