it'd honestly be more useful for the left to do a critical analysis of the Peoples Temple, which was started by Jim Jones effectively as a front for communist and Black civil rights organizing by exploiting the deep ties that US culture has to religion and especially Christianity.
I don't think that everything about Jim Jones was CIA propaganda or anything and think it is perfectly plausible that some dude in the 70s with a ton of power over hundreds of people did end up being corrupted by it and turned into a sex pest, but this is more a problem of the historical context it happened in. I've always thought the overall strategy was completely brilliant and wondered why no other communists in the United States have ever tried something similarly. in fact, this whole dimension of the Peoples Temple that was the entire motivation for their founding seemingly was covered up because early on Jim Jones did in fact make a lot of progress in organizing to end segregation.
maybe it's just that the optics were too shitty but at this point does that even fucking matter anymore?
