The idea of the "end of history" was the ideology embedded in the United States due to being under the omnipresent eye of their capitalist overlords during the fall of the Soviet union. The United States deluded itself into believing that history was over what 9/11 was was an awakening from this phantasmagoria. 9/11 was the tipping point for the United States, imo from the heights of the 90s consumer culture to where we are today.
the mass delusion is more a symptom of the material conditions dictating that there is no possible way for history to move forward that involves the continued survival of liberalism and capitalism, because having a bourgeois parasite class inherently means that the labor power of the system can never reach its maximal potential. only socialism is capable of achieving communism and by the end of the 20th century capitalism had mostly exhausted all of its historically progressive potential to drive innovation and building infrastructure, in the first world at least, so the strategy for western imperialist hegemony in the post Cold War world become one of maintaining the status quo and managing its slow decline.
