Rousseau came up with the fiction of the General Will, and from this, combined with the Westphalian principle of bourgeois nationalism, we get "The People." But from the socialists we get the idea of the Class Will. But then we see in the age of imperialism the development of the notion that the labor aristocrats and unionized workers of the imperial core are class traitors and possibly have different class interests than the prole sin the periphery. At the same time we see under Mao Zedong's New Democracy a rebirth of Rousseau's General Will of "The People": the National Bourgeoisie of the periphery are the allies of the proletariat in Third World Nationalism in their anti-imperialist struggle. Meanwhile in the core the opposite happens. New Left and idpol take over. New waves of feminism. Minority ethnic and religious struggles. Separatisms. A rebirth of Stirner and Egoism. The embracing of hyper individualist philosophies like Ayn Rand and Margaret Thatcher… "no such thing as society." what happened? Why did the "proletariat" struggles of the periphery become nationalist and give birth to "The People" again. Why did the "proletariat" struggles of the core become hyper individualist?
