US files for warrants to seize dozens more Venezuela-linked oil tankers, sources say
The U.S. government has filed multiple civil forfeiture actions in district courts, primarily in Washington, D.C., enabling the seizure and confiscation of oil cargoes and ships that have been involved in the trade, the sources told Reuters. They declined to be identified due to the sensitivity of the matter. The exact number of seizure warrants the U.S. has filed for, and how many it has already received, is unclear, the sources said, because the filings and legal orders are not public. Dozens have been filed, they added.

Argentina Registers Increase in Repression During Milei’s Term
The document denounces a systematic and selective increase in repression, particularly affecting retirees, journalists, human rights defenders, and minors participating in social protests. Fifty-one out of 139 demonstrations monitored between 2024 and 2025 were met with repression. Over two years, 2,585 injuries were recorded, including 155 senior citizens in 2025, five children exposed to tear gas, and 184 journalists affected by the repression. The use of rubber bullets at point-blank range, tear gas grenades, Byrna pistols, and water cannons violates international protocols.

Plane used in boat strike off Venezuela was painted to look like a civilian aircraft, AP sources say
The plane, part of a secret U.S. fleet used in surveillance operations, also was carrying munitions in the fuselage, rather than beneath the aircraft, raising questions about the extent to which the operation was disguised in ways that run contrary to military protocol. Details of the plane’s appearance, first reported Monday by The New York Times, were confirmed by two people familiar with the situation who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive matter.

Iran forms task force to study 'Gen Z anger' amid protests

She expressed condolences to families who lost relatives during the unrest, saying protesters were calling for "respect, a decent living, and a dignified life", and warned that Iranian society was in urgent need of solidarity.

Somalia cancels all agreements with the UAE over alleged sovereignty violations
Authorities say the agreements, which span key port operations, security co-operation and defence, have been stopped because of “harmful actions” of the UAE that undermine Somalia’s unity and sovereignty. The announcement is clearly linked to Israel’s recognition in December of Somaliland, a self-declared independent region in north-western Somalia that broke away in 1991, said Abdinor Dahir, an independent Somalia analyst.

Cosatu’s Shingange challenges Mantashe on youth unemployment claims
In an interview with South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) News, Mantashe said that young people are passive when it comes to applying for job opportunities. Shingange says maybe Mantashe has not come across young people who are applying for jobs. He says maybe the youth should hand their CVs over to Mantashe at Saturday’s anniversary celebrations taking place at the Moruleng Stadium in the North West. “If his government is of the view that the young people have not been looking for jobs, perhaps he has not come across them looking for jobs. So maybe they must give him CVs here. We agree. They have been looking for jobs and it’s not true that they have not been looking for jobs. If you have not seen them, perhaps he must receive the CVs here from them,” says Shingange.

Congressional progressives vow to block DHS funding without reforms
The declaration by the Democratic-aligned Congressional Progressive caucus comes as the Senate and House of Representatives race to meet an end-of-the-month deadline to approve a series of funding bills or risk a partial government shutdown. The debate over DHS funding has been rocked by last week’s fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent after the Trump administration ordered a surge of federal officers into the city amid its push for mass deportations.

Cold weather and data centres drive up US greenhouse gas emissions
Last year homes burned more gas for heating while the use of coal surged by 13% to meet rising electricity demands, the data finds. Although solar power also shot up last year, overall, greenhouse gas emissions went up by 2.4% after two years of decreases, outpacing the level of economic growth, according to estimates from the Rhodium Group. The authors say the policies of the Trump administration didn't "meaningfully impact" the rise in emissions but they expect this to change in the coming years.

Tudeh Party of Iran, Iran on the Brink of Potentially Devastating Transformations: The Urgent Need for Immediate Action to Save the Country from Dictatorship
It must be stated clearly once again that the outbreak of the current protest uprising and its expansion over the past 15 days are rooted directly in the rapid spread of poverty, inequality, and blatant injustice, as well as corruption and the wealth accumulation of a small minority as a result of the government’s economic policies over the past three decades—not in demands for the return of monarchy or the restoration of royal rule. Moreover, alongside the heroic struggle of hundreds of thousands of people against despotism and class oppression, it is evident that certain organized elements and groups, through acts of sabotage and violence, are attempting to pave the way for direct intervention by the United States and its allies in the course of the current protests. In this way, the catastrophic consequences of the ruling theocratic regime’s domestic policies, combined with the devastating impact of U.S. sanctions on people’s lives and livelihoods, have placed the country today in an extremely difficult situation. Imperialist media outlets, once again relying on their vast resources and capabilities, have launched propaganda campaigns and disseminated fabricated narratives aimed at restoring the monarchy. They are attempting to ride the wave of the people’s legitimate protests and divert the anti-dictatorship movement from its true path. On the one hand, these media provide an excuse for regime leaders to label the people’s protest uprising as the work of the United States and Israel; on the other hand, by exaggerating monarchist currents, they seek to create obstacles in the process of building unity and practical coordination among progressive and national forces.

TKP-ML IB: We salute the struggle of the Iranian people!
Protests that began in Iran on 28 December and quickly spread across the country have been ongoing for two weeks. At least 65 people have been killed and more than 2,300 arrested in the last 13 days. It has been reported that protests have taken place in 180 cities across 31 provinces, at over 500 locations. The Islamic Republic of Iran is not content with merely attacking and killing the Iranian people. In parallel with these attacks, it resorts to widespread internet blackouts, propagating that “external forces” are behind the actions of the Iranian people, and wages a counter-revolutionary war through the media. Despite these attacks by the reactionary Iranian regime, the people’s actions, particularly night protests, neighbourhood meetings, and chanting slogans from rooftops, continue in many cities. The actions of the Iranian people are not new. Over the last thirty years, there have been five major uprisings and many regional struggles for regime change. For example, alongside the politically-driven movements of 2006 and 2009, the urban protests that began in Mashhad in December 2016 quickly became politicised; in November 2018, the movement triggered by demonstrations against rising petrol prices and the cost of living rapidly became politicised; In September 2022, protests that began with Jina Mahsa Amini’s murder turned into the ‘Jin Jiyan Azadi’ uprising.

The New York Times Support for Israel Never Ends
The New York Times’ one-sided support for Israel began with Israeli independence in 1948. Last week’s front-page piece on Israel and New York mayor Zohran Mamdani indicates it will continue to do so. The article, titled “Israeli Government Accuses Mamdani of Antisemitism Over Canceled Orders,” hardly belonged on the front page. Israel’s condemnation of Mamdani has been consistent, particularly after he became the favorite in New York City’s mayoral election. The Times has been unfairly critical of Mamdani from the start, and it is only beginning to acknowledge that he has ideas and plans that would benefit the city. Giving ammunition to Israel and the Times was Mamdani’s reversal, on his first day in office, of his predecessor’s action to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Association’s definition of antisemitism, which threatened to impinge on Americans’ freedom of speech. Mamdani made it clear in the campaign that he would move in this direction, which was opposed by the editorial staff of the Times. Several days after the front-page article, the Times followed up with a long piece that favored Israel and criticized Mamdani once again.
