spaceflight doesn't seem very popular among leftists recently. what does /leftypol/ think about it? are the moon and mars just playthings for billionaires? will china do anything differently? is socialist thought relevant to future lives beyond earth or is it all just a scifi obsession?
the hatred of space by leftists is dumb, instead we should be pushing for space to be for the benefit of the people and not be monopolized by elon and co. Space colonization as a concept is not inherently bad,
why should we think about space when we havent even searched the oceans?
>>26491311. its boring compared to space
2. Theres not that much there resource wise
3. We can do both
Space is the ideal project for the communist horizon. There just isn't the same profit motive to explore the heavens under capital, and it would be an ideal place to focus excess energy. There's a reason it was the Soviets who kicked off the whole space thing.
Send the capitalists into space.
Communist society should exist here, on Earth. There's no imperative to expand to a solar system which is completely undeveloped, uninhabited 'wilderness.' Send the bourgeoisie into orbit, where the imperative to expand, innovate and develop productive forces actually makes sense and can be put to use harvesting asteroids and terraforming planets for infinite profits.
>>2649143>>2649131we can learn to communicate with the dolphins.
>>2649217>shouldWhy? Why "should" it be confined to earth?
>There's no imperative to expand to a solar system which is completely undeveloped, uninhabited 'wilderness.'There is imperative to not expand either.
>>2649084Space is fake and gay. There is literally nothing out there. It is literally a void.
>>2649143>2. Theres not that much there resource wiseNeither is there in space which is why nobody goes there except to waste money.
>>2649084True. We’ll still have to probably delay further developments as we adapt to climate change, but there’s no reason to disregard a perfectly fine concept for idealist delusions.
>>2649131Diversification.
>>2649143>its boring compared to spaceNonsense. It’s a perfectly interesting locale.
>>2681736There would've been no littering the orbit with satellites had the world listened to them earlier…
>>2681721Earth’s orbit is liberal dominated for now, but that will change later.
>>2681728>There is literally nothing out thereExcept literally everything that we know to exist, including us.
>>2681735>You know the only people who are interested in going to space are the same people who hate Earth.Nonsense. I think just applies to people actively going into, or trying to go into, space in the current moment.
>>2649128>the hatred of space by leftists is dumb, instead we should be pushing for space to be for the benefit of the people and not be monopolized by elon and co. Space colonization as a concept is not inherently bad,That's the sensible option and was in fact the position of the USSR and is of the "AES" countries like China and the DPRK to this day. The Bolsheviks were fascinated with the idea of space travel from the beginning. Unfortunately, the vast majority of people here and the rest of the online "Left" would have viciously opposed the Bolsheviks if they had lived back in 1917.
>>2681721>space is the most liberal place there is. why would you want to go there? You know what? Liberalism is unironically more progressive than the hot fucking garbage I've seen people try to pass off as "Communism" here.
>>2681746Have fun becoming fascist counter-revolutionary goons like the OG Khmer Rouge. Pol Pot = CIA
>>2649131Because climate change is accelerating
>>2683026And launching rockets accelerates it you retards. Truly evil people.
https://e360.yale.edu/features/satellite-emissionsScientists Warn of Emissions Risks from the Surge in Satellites
>With hundreds of satellites launched each year and tens of thousands more planned, scientists are increasingly concerned about an emerging problem: emissions from the fuels burned in launches and from the pollutants released when satellites and rocket stages flame out on reentry. >>2649084Space exploration is awesome but dipshits like Elon have hijacked it.
Leftist platform has to be the immediate total nationalization of all private space companies.
>>2683036Space is literally the stupidest thing there is.
>>2683035>>2683037why do I get the feeling that this isn't the first thread you've shit up with bad takes
you're probably that one annoying anon that spams USApol with third-worldism
>>2683039Two different people and it is literally the correct take. You guys are all a bunch of retards and nothing about space travel or any of that beyond:
>Hey Soviet make cool space poster!I've studied it in depth, space colonization is absolutely pointless and not even feasible. People are built to live on Earth, living in space offers zero advantages and a million problems. Why would anyone want to leave Earth and live indoors in a floating prison for the rest of their lives? If space mining and manufacturing ever become feasible, it will be 100% automated. There is no reason to send people any where except for the "cool factor." Sci-Fi shows aren't not serious analysis of technology and development.
>>2683044Nah, you're wrong.
Addressing the whole:
>We need a planet B!
Thing, what a horrible thought in the first place, what would even be the point of humanity's continued existence if we lost the Earth.
Two, there is no scenario where the planet would become less hospitable than outer space. We have access too endless oxygen and water here. Bunkers in the Earth would be much easier to survive any cataclysm than living in a hypothetical completely self-sustained space colony.
>>2683046Exactly, you have nothing to articulate other than:
>Wooohh I love sci-fi! Beam me up Scotty! >>2683049>>2683044Oh, its the moon dust retard
>>2683065No idea who or what you're talking about but why don't you try presenting an argument if you have one. Lol that's why you'll do anything but make a case for space other than:
>Space is cool! You know it, I know it! Everyone knows it! if it could be made cheap enough, asteroid mining might be a good source of minerals without damaging the environment on earth. however without something like startram the fuel used by rockets would probably be far worse
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StarTramUntil everyone has the equal opportunity to go to space, no one should
I feel like SciFi optimism and the whole space race kind of fit the zeitgeist of the mid 20th century where there was still a general idea of "progress" and that "things were getting better". Whether it's basically the Jetsons that imagined suburban white America ascending to space or Star Trek or whatever.
There's too many problems here. When we imagine the stars we increasingly imagine 40k or Alien over anything optimistic.
Never going to happen. Just like nuclear arms race, space exploration is a scheme to siphon money to the elite.
>>2649084>spaceflight doesn't seem very popular among leftists recently.Really? Last time I used twitter it seemed like most people on spitter were leftists with the occasional right winger being seen as an anomaly to be reportbombed.
Also space fedi is pretty active. Due to the nature of fedi I don't know what chuds are up to, but can't imagine space is that interesting to them since there's nothing "woke" to gripe about, and going to space involves getting in a pod.
>>2649131I consider the ocean part of space.
- Dark
- Pressurized vehicles
- Weird looking creatures
- Not fully mapped but impressively mapped thus far.
Im gonna be frank space will either damn us or save us. If we go to space and see evidence of succesful alt systems, then its hopium.
If we go to space and notice that everything is either dying, dead or have problems like we have, then…..
>>2683139That's not even a sci-fi spaceship. That's ridiculous Star Wars fantasy galaxy opera shit with a soviet theme.
>>2649084Is that fucking AI?
The government really can't find actual artists to make their propaganda posters? They have to use AI?
>>2683315Thats how people are gonna live in space though, O'Neil and McKendree cylinders.
>>2683320Yes it is, see the inconsistencies, the flag of China's deformed stars and lacking.
>>2683320Chuds and other reactionaries love AI.
>>2649084The western "left" has a poor class foundation similar to the Mensheviks. University professors, intellectuals, petty bourgeois like artists etc. They see no future for their own pathetic small-scale production way of life and so they seek to deny future to everyone. Hence their obsession with degrowth that was created by eugenicist bourgeois and absolute lack of solutions. The best they can do is gesture in Marx's direction but never ever in the direction of historical and current communist practice.
>>2683320Fuck petite bougie artisans.
>>2683353AI tech is the most socialist innovation in a century.
