Despite the fact that the two parties are currently very strongly merged with the state and getting a third party on ballot or getting past gerrymandering and voter suppression can be very hard, that could be changed if we started at a state level and worked up. The truth is a successful enough third party would be able to win and trigger a split between the legislative and executive branches (which is already underway anyways surprisingly) and likely bring up much more fundamental issues of state power being being beholden to the bourgeoisie in more sinister ways. Fundamentally our elected representatives don't hold real power, the deep state, which consists of unelected officials, the permanent members of the military, the supreme court, police, the bourgeois media, bourgeois think tanks, private security, and three letter agencies, holds power.
If we had a communist party that didn't tail democrats, that focused on studying the issues important to working class people and finding the solution that's in our best interests, and went door to door popularizing their policy positions and building alternative media based on face to face interactions, they could likely become a huge presence. Instead they do other shit, god knows why
