Palestine Action defendants acquitted of aggravated burglary over arms factory raid
As the verdicts were being read, the defendants held hands and embraced in the dock, as families and supporters cheered and wept. The jury did not convict defendants Head, Corner and Kamio of violent disorder and acquitted Devlin, Rogers and Rajwani of the same charge. The jury was also hung on charges of criminal damage - despite five of the defendants admitting to destroying weapons and equipment belonging to Elbit Systems during the break-in. Additionally, jurors did not return a verdict on the charge faced by Corner of grievous bodily harm with intent for striking a police officer with a sledgehammer. The six defendants have been held for around 18 months on remand- exceeding standard UK custodial time limits.

Labour MPs voice ‘cover-up’ fears as Sir Keir admits he knew of Mandelson's Epstein links before making him ambassador
Back-bench MPs voiced opposition today to Sir Keir’s bid to withhold some papers related to Lord Mandelson’s appointment. The Tories used a Commons motion to demand the release of all papers related to the decision. The PM’s amendment proposed to withhold some “papers prejudicial to UK national security or international relations.” John McDonnell, Labour MP for Hayes and Harlington, argued that the amendment could lead to a cover-up.

Strikes and protests on the rise as Germany’s hospital sector faces growing crisis
At university hospitals, nurses, laboratory workers, administrative staff and other employees are demanding higher wages and an improvement in their catastrophic working conditions. Despite the enormous burdens to which staff are exposed and the fact that recent contracts were synonymous with cuts in real wages, Verdi has decided to enter negotiations with a demand that is far too low.

Pakistan prepares for national strike in defense of democratic rights, and for release of Imran Khan
On Sunday, February 8, Pakistan will observe a rare national strike in opposition to the policies of the Shehbaz Sharif-led government and to demand the immediate release of former prime minister Imran Khan. The strike is called by Tehreek-e-Tahafuz-e-Ayin-e-Pakistan (Movement for the Protection of the Constitution of Pakistan or TTAP), an alliance of various parties led by the country’s main opposition party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI). The strike will coincide with the second anniversary of the 2024 National Assembly elections which PTI and others claim were rigged against PTI.

Australian universities to be graded on how well they deal with protests under antisemitism report card
Universities will be graded on how well they “deal with” protests, encampments and the display of flags as part of a controversial antisemitism report card system adopted by the Albanese government after the Bondi terror attack, according to documents seen by Guardian Australia. The antisemitism envoy, Jillian Segal, devised the report card system as part of a wide-ranging plan handed down to the federal government last July to combat antisemitism, which also proposed withholding government funding from universities that “facilitate, enable or fail to act against antisemitism”.

Sudan paramilitary advances near Ethiopia border
Control over Sudan's southeastern Blue Nile State, bordering both Ethiopia and South Sudan, is split between the army and a faction of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North, allies of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. In a statement released Tuesday, the SPLM-N, led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu, said they had "liberated the strategic city of Deim Mansour and areas of Bashir Nuqu and Khor al-Budi".

Colombian and Ecuadorian merchants and truckers protest escalating trade war between both nations
Protesters called for their governments to eliminate 30% tariffs on dozens of goods, warning the levies will hurt the economy of border provinces and affect energy companies on both sides of the border. Tariffs “generate crises, they don’t help the economy,” said Carlos Bastidas, president of an Ecuadorian transportation workers association. “With this protest we are hoping that both presidents eliminate those measures” and establish mechanisms for dialogue, he added.

Colombia’s paramilitary successors suspend peace talks
The EGC is the main successor of the now-defunct paramilitary organization AUC and is estimated to have almost 10,000 members and believed to be heavily involved in organized crime activity like drug trafficking and illegal mining. Particularly in the Caribbean region and the northwestern Antioquia and Choco provinces, the organization is believed to have coopted local law enforcement and municipal administrations.

Rubio Confirms End of New START, Sparking Calls for Nuclear Talks With Russia, China
Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday implicitly confirmed that New START—a key arms control treaty between the United States and Russia—will expire Thursday, prompting renewed demands for what one group called “a more coherent approach from the Trump administration” toward nuclear nonproliferation. Asked about the impending expiration of New START during a Wednesday press conference, Rubio said he didn’t “have any announcement” on the matter, and that President Donald Trump “will opine on it later.”

Texas A&M professor files lawsuit after firing over gender identity lesson
Melissa McCoul was a senior lecturer in the English department with over a decade of teaching experience. Republican lawmakers, including Gov. Greg Abbott, had called for her termination after seeing the video, which showed a student questioning whether the class discussion last July was legal under President Donald Trump’s executive order on gender.

Fulton county leader says he was warned he faced arrest before FBI raid
The Fulton county commission chair, Robb Pitts, said at a press conference this morning that he received a phone call last Monday – two days before the FBI served a criminal warrant to seize 2020 election documents – to warn that he, Georgia’s secretary of state, Brad Raffensperger, former Raffensperger deputy Gabriel Sterling and others in the state were at risk of imminent arrest by federal agents. “That did not happen on Monday,” Pitts said. “It didn’t happen on Tuesday, but lo and behold on Wednesday, the FBI shows up.”

New York governor picks a new running mate, as her current No. 2 moves to unseat her
The replacement of Delgado had been a long time coming. Hochul and Delgado had been feuding for months before Delgado said he wouldn’t run alongside the governor last year, teasing his own campaign for higher office. Delgado made the breakup official in June with his own candidacy for governor, calling for more progressive, transformational leadership in the state. Since then, Delgado been in a somewhat curious political position: He remains Hochul’s lieutenant governor, at least on paper, while he campaigns across the state tossing jabs in a race against his own boss.

Tennessee to test Stephen Miller’s plan of enlisting states for immigration enforcement
The most controversial and legally impactful proposal would require local school systems to verify lawful status for K-12 students. Those without legal residency would be charged tuition. Others could be denied enrollment. The Tennessee state senate passed a version of this bill last year, but the state house paused movement while looking for guidance from Washington on how it might affect federal education funding. The legislation directly challenges Plyler v Doe, a landmark 1982 US supreme court case that establishes a constitutional right for undocumented children to an education at public expense, setting up revisitation of the decision in the Roberts court.

Venezuela approves counter-reform of hydrocarbons law
The sequence of events triggered by the imperialist aggression against Venezuela led to the Venezuelan National Assembly’s approval, on 29 January, of a partial reform of the country’s Chávez-era hydrocarbons law. Immediately afterwards, the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), which is responsible for sanctions, published General License 46, partially lifting sanctions on Venezuelan oil, albeit with very strict restrictions. It is important to understand what this means. We publish here some initial observations, together with a previous comment on Marco Rubio’s appearance before the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee to discuss the aggression against Venezuela.

Governor Kathy Hochul Is Undermining Striking New York Nurses
On Monday morning, with temperatures below freezing, New York City nurses began the fourth week of the largest nursing strike in the city’s history, which has seen some fifteen thousand nurses across multiple Montefiore, Mount Sinai, and NewYork-Presbyterian facilities walk off the job. Hundreds of nurses kicked off the week by gathering near Grand Central Terminal and marching to Governor Kathy Hochul’s nearby office, aiming pressure at a state leader who has repeatedly extended an executive order allowing hospitals to more easily hire temporary and out-of-state replacement staff (referred to in union parlance as “scabs”), blunting the leverage of the work stoppage. Nurses’ demand is specific: Hochul should not extend the executive order again, removing a measure that has made it easier for hospital systems to staff around the strike. The latest extension expires today. The striking nurses, represented by the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA), walked off the job at private hospitals across New York City on January 12. The strike does not include all NYSNA members statewide, nor nurses at public hospitals like those in the NYC Health + Hospitals system, who work under separate contracts. Bargaining between NYSNA and hospital management began months before those contracts expired at the end of 2025, stretching through the fall without an agreement. Nurses say hospital executives refused to agree to enforceable safe-staffing standards and meaningful protections against workplace violence, framing the dispute as a patient-care crisis and a retention crisis at once. When negotiations failed to produce a deal, nurses voted to strike, walking out in mid-January after giving notice.

The Epstein scandal is an offspring of capitalism
The much-publicized Epstein scandal is persistently described as a “dark anomaly,” a moral rupture inside an otherwise functioning system. This description is false. What it conceals is more important than what it reveals. The affair did not expose a deviation from capitalism but one of its normal, if usually less visible, operations. By treating Epstein as an exception, bourgeois discourse shields the system that made him possible. Jeffrey Epstein was not an outsider who infiltrated elite circles. He operated comfortably within them, because capitalism systematically produces both extreme vulnerability at one pole and extreme impunity at the other. Where wealth is concentrated, power follows; where power follows, accountability retreats. This is not corruption of the system. It is the system functioning according to its own laws. Capitalism rests on exploitation presented as free exchange. The worker “chooses” to sell labor-power only because material conditions leave no alternative. Marx described this contradiction with precision when he noted that the sphere of exchange appears as “a very Eden of the innate rights of man,” while in reality it conceals relations of domination. Formal equality masks material coercion. As Marx put it bluntly, “Between equal rights, force decides.” In capitalist society, that force is economic necessity, socially organized and legally protected.
