What I know is most Vajrayana traditions (eg. Gelug) are as much based in regional Tibetan (Bon) paganism and guru worship as they are rooted in any genuine surviving esoteric Buddhism that was lost in other transmissions.
There's no reason you need to have sex with the lama, prostrate before him, drink semen, get ritually drunk, or any other weird ass shit. Bonkers stuff.
